My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I'm a large, hairy, nerdy, man who enjoys traveling, reading science fiction and fantasy novels, playing video games, and arguing with people. Sometimes I also pretend to be an intellectual and write papers about Chinese History. Sometimes I also take time off to do rednecky stuff (shooting, motorcycling, camping etc.).

Most of the time when I take Myers-Briggs type index tests I get the INTP result. I don't really believe that such things can tell you much about a person, but most of the descriptions of that personality type describe my personality much of the time. At least, in the sense that I am obsessed with systems and logic and emotionally unconnected, especially when working on a problem.

Also, my Chinese name is 許書聖, which means something like the Saint of Erudition (or Calligraphy). And is totally awesome.

Also Ron Swanson is my role-model.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I grew up and went to high school in Tampa, went to the University of North Florida (in Jacksonville. DUVAL!) for College and received B.A.s in history and economics, with a minor in Asian studies. I received a Master's degree in Chinese History from Columbia University two years ago (after living in New York for two years), then spent a year at a Chinese language program in Taiwan. I used that time to see some of the world and work on my partying skills, and I am now living in my house in North Tampa . My academic career has sort of fallen through so I am currently substitute teaching for Hillsborough county. Going back to school to learn coding next month in the Front End Engineering program at the Iron Yard in St. Pete.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
I like to think I'm pretty good at writing history, since I kind of do that for a living. My Chinese level is also pretty good now (if they had an option for Fluent-ish, I would pick that rather than Okay). I used to write a lot of speculative short fiction, and I thought I was pretty good, but the rejection letters from the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction tend to disagree.

Also many people find my chest hair to be impressive, and
that I am quite cuddle-some is well-known.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I'm growing a beard out again. If that is relevant to your interests.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

I read a lot of history (mostly about China but in a broad range of subjects) and philosophy, and occasionally foray into English 101-type great literature. Mostly, though, I read a lot of epic fantasy and scifi. Favorite book is a toss-up between TH White's The Once and Future King and The Sand Pebbles by Richard Mckenna. Oh, and while I may not be into poetry per se, I love e. e. cummings more than I could say.

As for movies and tv shows, I mostly like sweeping historical dramas or character-centered dramas. Favorite film probably Cool Hand Luke. I'm a sucker for the string of "likeable anti-hero acts as head of criminal enterprise" shows and my favorite show at the moment is probably Deadwood. Of course, I also love Firefly. Right now, I'm trying to keep up with Better Caul Saul, Justified, Archer, Outlander, and the new Season of Game of Thrones.

I like mostly classic Rock and classic (though not modern) Country. Right now I'd say my favorite band is The Protomen, out of Tennessee, that do a string of Megaman-themed rock operas. Recently I've been getting into some indie rock (most recently The Mountain Goats), but I still think that Bruce Springsteen's "The River" is the saddest song ever made.

I like all the food.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
1. Motorcycle
2. Books
3. Beer
4. Interesting Company
5. Sunglasses?
6. Understanding that we live in a malevolent universe controlled by Murphy's law
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Writing, my research, historical theory, the internet, politics, social dynamics, and what I am going to do in the next five minutes.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Usually out casually drinking. Sometimes out heavily drinking and sometimes curled up at home with a good book.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
In the last several months, I have gotten, like.... way too far into watching professional wrestling. WWE and its developmental territory NXT, but also some less well known indie promotions like Chikara, PWG, and Lucha Underground.

Honestly I've only ever received two messages that I didn't initiate on here, and those were from people I know in real life. If you feel the desire to message me, by all means, do so.
