BRIEF NOTE ON HOW TO USE OKc...
I don't have the premium account. I'm flattered that a number of you anonymous cowards "like me"... [bats eyes and blushes]... But nothing doing because OKc Bot stands between me and your lovely self, like an evil troll demanding payment to use his bridge. If I may make a suggestion: Write me a note. Then, when I've read and pondered your thoughts, I'll write you a note back. It'll be like passing notes in 10th grade. In this way we'll get to know each other a little.
There's genius in this plan's simplicity...
Ahem.... Without further ado:
Please be as beautiful on the inside as you are on the outside, confident, emotionally available and capable of vulnerability. You should be generally happy and self-aware as well as mindful of others, the planet and society. You should have a critical, assertive, and skeptical mind. You should have a dinner dress and a pair of hiking boots and perhaps even a sleeping bag. You should recognize that not all books were created equally and strive to read the good ones. You should enjoy discussing ideas. You should know what you want in life and be pursuing those goals. Above all, you should be smiling.
Deal breakers: Chronic or clinical depression; anything more than a casual, trivial interest in popular culture; e.g., television shows, celebrities, popular music, politics, et cetera. Also, sports, which are so boring it melts the mind (watching, not playing; rock on if you're an athlete).
Basically, all of the above is disengagement with the world and disengagement is unforgivable. Don't message me if you give no fucks. Life is hard, but it's a lot harder if you don't give a damn.
Some of the above comes from personal experience, some from simple observation. Call me picky.
And of course, in every bit of the above, I am careful not to expect anything of anyone which I do not first expect of myself.
I have a few really good friends rather than the opposite. I'm like Eleanor Roosevelt: I'd rather talk about ideas than things or people. Of course––and I'm sure Ms Roosevelt would agree with me on this––things and actions are the manifestation of ideas and beliefs. Which means it's prudent to venture from the abstract to the concrete at least occasionally, not only to reality-test, but also to affect positive change in the world. No one likes a navel-gazer (see the "no fucks" clause, above).
However we think, our thoughts become actions; it's important to be intentional about this process. I try to keep my blind spots small; how successful I am, I must leave to others to judge.
Politically, I am left of center, not liberal, not conservative, definitely progressive; pro choice, pro gay-rights; pro gun-rights, pro gun-control, pro-publicly funded campaigns, pro-term limits, anti-lobby, anti-party, anti-suburban-military-congressional-complex, anti-carbon and anti-growth based economics.
Spiritually, I am a seeker. I am quite comfortable not knowing and living with cosmic uncertainty. I don't believe there is a god or creative force in the universe. The actual or seeming lack of a cosmic 'purpose' to life does not at all take away from our personal, profound human experience of it. I believe in us; I believe in humanity. My basic spiritual nourishment is community, literature and meditation. I thrive on high-quality basics: ideas, relationships with friends and family, my pup, food, water and such.
I spend some of my time mountain biking, running, hiking, backcountry camping, cross training, hunting, et cetera.
I don't watch television; I avoid it like the plague because it is a plague. We won't get along very well if you're much of a TV gazer. Of course, every good rule has exceptions. Eg: Archer (Lannnnnna!!), and whacked-out, B-grade monster movies like Cloverfield, Super 8, Godzilla, Mars Attacks, Tremors... you get the idea. Fun and ironical is fine on occasion, of course. Serious indulgence, not so much.
I lived in Central America for nine months and northern Europe for four. I've been mugged and hit by a car (I won, on both counts). I once rode across most of the US on a side-car motorcycle. I am a morning person but stay up way too late, generally.
For the most part I am a domesticated creature and can keep my hands to myself until informed otherwise. If you're looking for amigos first and foremost, that can totally work. Romance is good, but if it prevents making new friends then desire's gone too far. The more the merrier, in this little life, aye?
And even if romance is the goal, let's take time to become friends first. In my experience, the quicker things start, the quicker they end.
Get in touch, it'll be very nice to meet you.
