My Self-Summary

I am Richard. I like people. I am the proud papa of a potbellied pig. My hair used to be long, but I got past that a few years ago, and now it's in a bit of a curlhawk. My sister is 10 and is cuter, smarter, and more talented and charming than anyone else's sister, and my nephew is the bar-none best toddler who ever toddled, a claim which would undoubtedly hold up in court. I don't wear glasses anymore, despite what my pictures imply. I speak a little Yiddish. I am a people person, even when I'm feeling like a loner. I believe that music is perhaps the greatest medium of communication on the planet, and regardless of where life may take me, music will always be a part of what I do. I recently cycled from Texas to Alaska with a charity team to help fight cancer (www.texas4000.org). I like silly things. I have faith in mankind. I enjoy using short sentences.
Now in German
Ich habe ein bisschen Deutsch in der Hochschule gelernt, aber jetzt habe ich viel vergessen. Diese Sätze waren sehr schwer zu machen, und ich glaube, dass etwas ist wahrscheinlich falsch.

What I’m doing with my life

I FINALLY FINISHED COLLEGE I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW HAPPY THIS MAKES ME. I no longer feel like I'm trespassing in adulthood's backyard. Now, anyone in desperate need of an anthropologist?

Looking for a new career, probably in the nonprofit realm. I have experience, and it makes me feel warm and fuzzy. I'll be paying off my student loans for roughly 5000 years, but at least I'll be doing some good.

I've been talking about getting my own band together, but it ain't happening yet; this makes me basically exactly like 50% of this town (the other 50% already has the band going).

So yeah, basically, I'm just somehow passing the time until Death sees fit to take me. (I'm still working out the details there.)

I’m really good at

Being too shy to introduce myself to a new person in public. Why else would I be here, filling all these out? (I have my moments, though.) Also: not knowing what to do when I find myself holding a guitar at a party or what have you with people around me waiting to hear me play "something, anything."

Also: Dealing with kids and animals. Math (to a point). Listening, even if it may not be obvious. Playing it by ear. Finding the humor.

The first things people usually notice about me

Used to be my long hair, which is gone now (and THANK GOD). Now it's more likely to be my hat, if I have one on. (If not: The curls. I cannot escape them. I don't want to.)

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

(a) Pop neurology, stupid trivia, guides to new skills. Occasionally, things not broken into such bite-sized pieces. (b) Anything not shallow or gratuitous. Also, movies that are shallow and gratuitous. (c) Everything from quirky rock to New Orleans funk to industrial electronica to klezmer to Baroque chamber pieces to intelligent hip-hop to West African pop to Texas swing to old and new soul to lushly-arranged jazz to cheese metal to Latin fusion to OH GOD IT NEVER ENDS. (d) Foods with flavor. I've been getting less and less picky in recent years.

The six things I could never do without

I was trying to come up with something clever to put here (example: "heart, lung #1, stomach, brain..."), but that and the other ideas I had were kind of stupid.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

"Leroy, you're such a pig."

On a typical Friday night I am

Doing whatever it is I do.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I overthink things. It's not so much a head-over-heart thing: my head and my heart are both pretty overactive, I think, and they seem to work together to make my life more frustrating than necessary. Help me stop thinking so much.

You should message me if

The following are big bonuses:

You're local. Actual in-person interaction is so much more compelling and potentially meaningful than the digital thing.

You can appreciate humor in all its facets. Sometimes I go for dry and witty, sometimes ridiculous, sometimes surreal and disturbing. It's important.

You don't hate kids or animals. That's just a red flag to me. You may not want them at this point in life, but people who HATE them are people I have trouble relating to.

You like conversation for its own sake. The brain is a sexy organ, man. All those CURVES.

You're playful, or at least have your moments.

You're sassy, but in a positive, I-love-life way, as opposed to an I-love-being-rude-and-calling-it-"sassy" way.

You find a reason to smile, and know why you're smiling.

You love you fellow humans.

Pig haters need not apply.
