I am Laidback, Thankful, and Full of questions.

My Self-Summary

I can't wait until I've got a face full of lines. Lines that tell a good story. Lines from laughing too much, yelling too much, and loving too much. Right now though, I’m just a kid- trying to do, and be something good… and honestly, half the time I don’t know what that means; which, I've got to admit: I'm revelling in. I don't want to know everything just yet. Right now, I'm focusing my energy on striving for growth, experience and knowledge. That being said…I’m trying to branch out and make some new friends in the Boston area. I think I'm pretty neat. I like green freezer pops and good burbon...though generally not at the same time. I could talk social theory for hours, and a passionate, intelligent conversation will pretty much always make me swoon. Yes. I said swoon. I drink a glass of milk everyday, and own a cat named Evalynn. I use the word "own" pretty casually. We're more like partners in crime....that sleep a lot. I like girls that wear sweaters, with sleeves that come down to their knuckles. I hate pretentious people, but really like craft beer. I keep getting told I act older than my age, but I still really hate taking cough syrup.

What I’m doing with my life

Taking a year off before grad school. Remembering why I fell in love with Sociology in the first place. Being really curious. Soaking up good books. Charcoaling and sketching. Writing. Playing music. Sleeping in. Getting paid to work with some of the coolest kids out there (boggles my mind). Helping women (and men) through the process of obtaining 209A restraining orders. Cooking dinner. Painting my toes. I'm pretty lucky.

I’m really good at

Being me. Accidentally killing houseplants. Communicating complicated things in non-complicated ways. Making up words. Taking naps in the daytime. Driving around at night with no direction. Shaking my butt and calling it dancing…or more realistically “inspired movement”. Making things. Pretending I know how to be a bartender at the bar I work at. Loving on people.

The first things people usually notice about me

I'm honest. Which is probably good considering I'm a terrible liar.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

That’s a lot of questions for one box….

I'm always reading something. But beyond that, I really just love books, in a way I think, we're forgetting. I love the smell of used book stores, and the tangibility of pages and creases. I don't want to read something on a screen. I want to hold it in my hands and scribble all through the margins.

Last five books from the last few months: "Savage Inequalities" by Jonathan Kozol, "Sula" by Toni Morrison, "Black Like Me" by John Howard Griffin, "If On A Winter's Night A Traveler" by Italo Calvino and "Mona In The Promised Land" by Gish Jen.

Love me some poetry. Reading, writing, discussing, and performing it. Some of my all time favorites are Neruda, Clifton, Giovanni, Oliver, Hacker, and Hoagland.

Honestly, I never remember the names of movies. Some never-fail classics: Now and Then, When Harry Met Sally, Sandlot, Stand By Me, Notting Hill, Practical Magic and anything containing Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin...I don't have cable and don't really mind...SVU always seems to be running on my netflix account though.

Always a huge folk-head. Traditional and modern. Lots of things fit into that category (Deb Talan, Iron and Wine....) Love the blues (especially Etta James). I thought the Zap Mama Concert I just saw was brilliant. I also really want the new Thao with the Get Down Stay Down album...and would really like to catch Aesop Rock if they/he come around. I think "A Case of You" by Joni Mitchell and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Roberta Flack are two of the most beautiful songs ever written. That might give you some idea, though a whole bunch is left off of this list.

The six things I could never do without

the people I love, curiosity, laughter, coffee, dusk, and a good breeze.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Identity. The construction of it, and it‘s relevance/importance, things I’ve just read, the kids I work with, the proletariat, whether or not Marx was a dick, Women, hanging up my clean laundry, bills, how to make drinks I actually don't know how to make, where I've left things, people, faces, and how the whole thing works.

On a typical Friday night I am

Bartending. Actually, I bartend every Friday night, pretty much without fail....but when/if I'm not...I'm a big fan of the following:

Craft beer
Live jazz/blues/funk/soul or anything with a cello
Cooking big dinners at my apartment for people I love
Heading home for the weekend
Making art/ watching law and order/ napping/ hanging out with Evalynn the cat.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I'm a truly awful speller. So much so that it's rare for me to not have a word document running in the background to check things on. I have an irrational fear of both Bigfoot and electricity. Both of which can kill me, and both of which I cannot see.

You should message me if

If you know how to love pbr AND a great porter/stout/IPA. If you can show me fun places in Boston. If you can recommend good music/books/fun facts. If you want to teach me something.
