I grew up in the midwest and have had the same group of close friends since I was a kid, despite living in nine countries since then. I aspire to be nonjudgmental of other people, but brutally honest with myself. Truthfully, my favorite thing in the world is to know someone well enough to communicate without words and make each other laugh on a whim.
I'm a classic "socially poised introvert" (to borrow from Susan Cain's book "Quiet"), meaning I love company and even hosting parties, but I'm prone to retreat into my weekends as well. If I had to describe myself in a word, it would be "fastidious." I honestly enjoy working hard (not long), presenting myself well, making time to read and meditate, cleaning and cooking in my apartment. Every once in a while I go off on a solo adventure somewhere, and I think it's fair to say I have a few unusual experiences... which are, in my opinion, one of the many things more worth collecting in this world than money.
What I’m doing with my life
I find my job to be fascinating and fulfilling, and feel lucky to work on something I care about... which is why I fill my free time with projects, learning and friends. Here's a random assortment of things I've done in the past two weeks: wrote a few articles, went to yoga, did some sketching, read the 3rd Harry Potter book in French, played the guitar pretty much every day, made some ceviche and split a bottle of wine with a friend, camping, a long run in the park, and began planning a new project I'm about to start in the education realm...
I’m really good at
Staying curious. Every 6 months or so, I devote myself wholly to learning a new skill.
The first things people usually notice about me
My accent is a strange mix of just about everything as a result of long bouts of living abroad, from China to France to Peru and so on.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Authors: Frank Herbert, Brandon Sanderson, Patrick Rothfuss, Seneca, Viktor Frankel, Daniel Kahneman, Dan Ariely, the Heath Brothers, Susan Cain, Adam Grant, and many more...
My favorite TV shows are of the nerdy variety: Dr. Who, BSG, etc... but I like anything with good storytelling and some moral introspection.
The six things I could never do without
I've sold all my worldly possessions more than once in my life...
but I couldn't do without the intangibles, like old friends and new
I spend a lot of time thinking about
If we're actually making the world a better place here in SF with all our technology, or just patting ourselves on the back and ignoring the real problems.
On a typical Friday night I am
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Since I come from a family of engineers, I can come across as the hyper-rational/analytical type... but the truth is that I spend a lot of time thinking about things like love, empathy and human connection.
You should message me if
I'm innately attracted to the kinetic, empathetic and sensual sort who helps me to stop and smell the roses. I can be overly-driven at times, but I have no interest in being a power-couple.
