My self-summary

What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Working hard as an editor for a literary magazine. Enjoying the arts. Spending ample time with my one-year-old nephew and learning what he has to teach me. Going through years worth of creative writing and figuring out what might be publishable (with another several years of revisions). Trying to be a good friend, son, brother, uncle, colleague, neighbor, stranger, and writer. Improving, hopefully.

I recently moved and am enjoying a little renaissance of homemaking with myself, from building a flowerbed to hanging blinds and curtains to just kicking back in the hammock and relishing it all. Recent knee surgery has given me the first real physical setback of my life, a big lesson in humility. Now I'm exploring ways of exercise that are new to me, including swimming, biking, and developing an original technique for hobble-running that resembles a kind of mobile dance. If you're in need of a good laugh, I'm happy to demonstrate it for you.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Tangents. Staying awake. Analyzing. Overanalyzing. Imagining. Animal companionship. Coordinating clashing colors. Alliteration. Self-deprecation. Irony. Heart-to-heart conversations. Blathering. Listening to good tunes. Listening to crickets and enjoying a quiet moment.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
My eyes or my schnauz.

Books: Poetry and prose by Merwin, Brautigan, & Jack Gilbert. Vonnegut, Hesse, Sorrentino, Poe Ballantine. Endless Love by Scott Spencer. Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. Gabo & Borges. Collections by youngish short-story writers like Lahiri, Haslett, Puchner, Diaz. Seth books. Quote books by Richard Kehl.

Movies: I like indies and far-out stuff the best, but I can enjoy the modern myths of superheros, too. Blue Valentine, The Broken Circle Breakdown, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, most Kaufman really, Lost in Translation, Old Joy, The Diving Bell & the Butterfly, The Lives of Others, Mr. Nobody, Waking Life and other Linklater movies. An eclectic mix of comedies: Carnage, Away We Go, This is the End, Team America, 7 Psychopaths, The Royal Tenenbaums, Miranda July, some Woody Allen. Documentaries of all sorts.

TV: True Detective, American Horror Story, Game of Thrones, Arrested Development. I think Six Feet Under was a masterpiece in its day. I got into The Leftovers this year, and that led me to Lost, which I just finished and am still puzzling over. Now making my way through Breaking Bad with a friend. And I like watching TED talks.

Shows: Any live music. The Monti. An occasional play

Music: Shovels & Rope, Lost in the Trees, Explosions in the Sky,
Bonnie Prince Billy, Black Keys, Sylvan Esso, Portishead, Radiohead, Talking Heads, probably other heads. Otis Reading. Mississippi John. Miles & Coltrane. Electronic, jazz, funk, blues, bluegrass, classical, whatever has that soul.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
First, a preface listing the obvious, which I hope goes for you, too, because I think humanity would be in shreds without these: family & friends; water; The Sun; chloroplasts; love, compassion, integrity, & sentimentality; fire; the four seasons; laughter; sex; spirit; spontaneity; babies; red wine; creativity and imagination.

As for the personal:

A guitar
Pencil-top erasers
A hammock
Comfortable running shoes
The night sky
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
How I'm going to get it all done. Houses. Narrative arc. Thailand. How I would've done it differently. That witty remark I should've said in the moment but is just coming to me now.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
. . . doing what feels right. Throwing back a beer with my buds, playing pool, cheering for the band to play an encore. Staying late at the office to finish up work so it won't be hanging over my Saturday night. Lately I've been spending more time at home, strumming the guitar, watching a TV show or movie, or diving into a book. I also love a good late-night/early-morning run.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
In my most private and alone moments, I sometimes beatbox extravagantly.
