My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
[In progress.]
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Working hard as an editor for a literary magazine. Enjoying the arts. Going through years worth of creative writing and flushing out what might be publishable. Spending lots of time outdoors. Enjoying the company of good friends. Improving my home.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Tangents. Staying awake. Analyzing. Overanalyzing. Imagining. Animal companionship. Coordinating clashing colors. Alliteration. Self-deprecation. Irony. Heart-to-heart conversations. Blathering. Collecting quotes. Quiet moments.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
My eyes or my schnauz.

Books: Poetry and prose by Merwin, Brautigan, Jack Gilbert, & Tony Hoagland. Vonnegut, Hesse, Sorrentino, Poe Ballantine. Notes to Myself by Hugh Prather. Endless Love by Scott Spencer. Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. Gabo & Borges. Contemporary short-story writers including Lahiri, Haslett, Puchner, Diaz. Seth material. Quote books by Richard Kehl.

Magazines/Journals: The New Yorker, The Sun, Ecotone, Tin House, Ninth Letter, Orion.

Movies: I like indies and far-out stuff the best, but I can enjoy the modern myths of superheros, too. Blue Valentine, The Broken Circle Breakdown, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind -- most Kaufman, really -- Lost in Translation, Old Joy, The Diving Bell & the Butterfly, The Lives of Others, Mr. Nobody, Whiplash, Waking Life. Comedies: Carnage, Away We Go, This is the End, Team America, 7 Psychopaths, The Royal Tenenbaums, Miranda July, some Woody Allen. Any documentary that makes me feel it in my bones.

TV: I think Six Feet Under was a masterpiece in its day. I got into The Leftovers this year, and that led me to Lost, which I recently finished. Currently making my way through Breaking Bad with a friend. And I like TED talks.

Shows: Any live music. The Monti. An occasional play.

Music: Shovels & Rope, Lost in the Trees, Explosions in the Sky,
Bonnie Prince Billy, Black Keys, Sylvan Esso, Lemon Jelly. Portishead, Radiohead, Talking Heads. Otis Reading. Mississippi John. Miles, Coltrane, Ella, Sarah Vaughn. Electronic, jazz, funk, blues, bluegrass, classical, whatever's got soul.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
First, a preface listing the obvious, which I hope goes for you, too, because I think humanity would be in shreds without these: family & friends; water; sunshine; chloroplasts; love, compassion, integrity, & sentimentality; fire; the four seasons; laughter; sex; spirit; spontaneity; babies; red wine; creativity and imagination.

As for the personal:

A guitar
Pencil-top erasers
A hammock
Comfortable running shoes
The night sky
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
How I'm going to get it all done. Houses. Light. Implausible creative projects. Tropical locales. How I would've done it differently. Narrative arc.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Throwing back a beer with my buds, playing pool, cheering for the band to play an encore. Watching a movie. Staying late at the office to finish up work so it won't be hanging over my Saturday night. Relaxing at home, strumming the guitar, watching something good on the tube or reading.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
In my most private and alone moments, I sometimes beatbox extravagantly.

Offer a few tips to help matches win you over.
. . . you think we're cut from the same cloth. If you want a partner for a live music show, a movie, or The Monti. If you have an artistic or philosophical bent. If you're down with goofiness. If you're kind, thoughtful, open, independent, good at meeting halfway, and interested in building a rich and well-balanced relationship.
