I am intrigued, irreverant, and human.

My Self-Summary

My perennial problem is unending curiosity. Usually this has only happy consequences - like an impromptu 700 mile road trip; but there's the occasional unpleasant hiccup. Over the years I've tried glass blowing and pottery; and enjoy making things (like lamps) and interfaces for imaginary products. I studied linguistics in grad school but the work I do now is only tangentially related to it. Many of my lasting interests are connected: language, communication, how we create/package information, design, poetry.

I've lived in a host of places, some less than known than others: Bentonville, Iowa City, Providence, Delhi, Dublin, Princeton, Bloomington to name some.

I appreciate people who aren't jaded with life and are keen to explore - not just the world around us but each other as well; someone who doesn't overly plan their life, and who considers (like me) a friendship based on openness and communication to be the seed of all else; someone who enjoys conversation and insists on basic courtesies.

What I’m doing with my life

Drifting, though sometimes purposefully, through it...

I’m really good at

Sleeping; really.

The first things people usually notice about me

I don't think I'd want to know.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I grew up listening to Dylan, and then found Baez, Guthrie, Who, Nina Simone. For the last few years I've been wed more or less exclusively to a form of spoken word called ghazal, with some other things thrown in the mix occasionally.

I'm very taken with sci fiction these days: Asimov, Gaimon, Gibson. Before that Murakami, Tom Robbins, David Sedaris, Henry James, Roald Dahl, Camus. I read in bursts, with long periods punctuated with long periods of hibernation. Philosophy, science and design make up another big chunk of my reading; authors like Hofstadter, Tufte, Joseph Campbell.

Recency tends to distort my memory of films I've liked, but some particularly memorable ones were: Shower, Bend it like Beckham, Luna's Game, Amelie, Monsieur Ibrahim; a lot of Eric Rohmer's and Truffaut's films, Woody Allen of course, Kieslowski; Remains of the Day, Guru, Bombay Talkies and a bunch of other Merchant Ivory films.

The six things I could never do without

I have no idea - I've done without virtually everything at some point or other in my life. But things I'd rather not have to do without: the company of smart/passionate people, books, a good pair of stitched leather boots, my motorcycle, Wikipedia.

I'm also starting to get inordinately fond of sleep.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Language and design; about all the motorcycle trips I've missed; about why I'm fanatically in love with the MTA's metro card machines; and about the unread novels that await in my apartment.

If most people are actually evil or simply clueless

What my life would be as a nomadic millionaire

If enlightened self interest is actually better than selflessness

On a typical Friday night I am

Waking up to the fact that I have made no plans - and often feeling quite happy about it.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I get greedy in libraries; taking out far more books than I could possibly read in the few days that I have them.

You should message me if

you want to meet someone to spend time with doing things other than just hanging out in bars...
