My self-summary
I'm idealistic and intellectually curious, and I'd like to meet someone who shares those traits. I like people who are interested in confronting big ideas.

Introverted, but comfortable speaking in public. Skeptical of most authority figures. Serious-minded and sincere. Complexly funny in an 'I didn't expect that to come out of this guy's mouth' sort of way.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm a composer - I write music for orchestras and string quartets and that sort of thing. I also play viola. I play guitar and sing in a rock band that makes quirky pop songs (sort of like the Pixies or the Shins, although I think our next record will probably sound like early REM or something even poppier). I recently moved back to the area after going to grad school in San Diego, and I teach music at one of the colleges here.

I also work as a writer and editor -- I started with a Blogspot site and eventually turned that into a job. I did that full-time before I got my teaching gig. I'm finishing up a book now.
I’m really good at
Writing funny songs, solving logic puzzles, taking tests.

I'm becoming a pretty good teacher. I think the secret to teaching older students is this: 95 percent lesson, five percent jokes. If you get the ratio right, your students will have fun, and they'll probably learn a lot. You don't even have to be particularly funny. They'll appreciate the effort.
The first things people usually notice about me
I'm tall, and I look like I'm lost in thought most of the time.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Haruki Murakami, Kurt Vonnegut, David Foster Wallace, Matt Taibbi, Natsuo Kirino, Paul Auster. Murakami is my favorite - so dreamlike and down-to-earth at the same time. I also like books about current events.

Movies: Blue Velvet, Mulholland Dr., Idiocracy, Delicatessen, No Country For Old Men, Cabin in the Woods, Silence of the Lambs, Office Space, Memento. I really like horror films, too, and it's great to find a non-awful one.

Music: Joanna Newsom, Talking Heads, Arcade Fire, the Pixies, Pavement, Melt Banana, Teenage Fanclub, Wire, Lungfish, the Chills, '60s Motown, post-punk, modern classical music, medieval music, Beethoven. Recently I've listened to Kate Bush and Youth Lagoon a lot.

TV: Arrested Development, The Daily Show, The Office UK, House of Cards.

Food: Vietnamese, Thai, Southern California Mexican, really anything with cilantro and flavor. I like meat, but I don't eat a ton of it. I cook a lot of tofu, tempeh and vegetables. I also love junk food, but I try to be healthy at least a couple meals a day.
The six things I could never do without
A guitar, my little brothers and sister, Clif Bars, knockoff Diet Coke (this is getting embarrassing), free time to work on my own projects, musicians to write for.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Music (obviously), politics, social trends, baseball (although that last isn't something we need to have in common). I can stare at a map forever and be fascinated by places I'll probably never actually visit, particularly northern places like Whitehorse or Nuuk. I just returned from a trip to Iceland that satisfied that curiosity a bit.
On a typical Friday night I am
Playing in a concert, or going to one. Traveling somewhere. Or sometimes working.
