My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
After a brief hiatus from OKC, I thought a reboot of the profile would be in order…

Me, in as small a nutshell as I can manage: Grew up in LA, did stints in Ithaca (with a smattering of NYC in there), San Francisco and now DC. Spent summers in Mexico in a tiny fishing village when I was a kid. If you put any stock into Myers-Briggs, I am an ENTJ. I am very calm under fire, and a protector by nature. I have friends of over 25 years, I lend ingredients to the lady two floors down to make oatmeal raisin cookies, and laugh at children doing silly things in the park. I was honored to give the toast at my parents' 50th wedding anniversary in February and I quoted Neruda and Rumi when talking about love. They taught me to be a strong spirit and raised me right. Familia is critically important to me. I have an old soul for just being 35 (damn, I'm 36 now?), and have the stories to prove it. I am a scientist by training and trade and love it. To counter the analytical side I play music. Been doing it for more than half my life. My best friend says he can see my soul when I play. I do hope that's true. I run, can play 3rd base, scrum-half and midfielder. I've been told I'm sweet, caring, intelligent, gregarious and not too hard on the eyes.
I am passionate about many things: science, art, literature, music. Most of all, I'm passionate about being a Single Dad to my 5 year-old little girl. I am extremely proud and protective of her, and am teaching her to be as strong as the rest of the women in my familia. She is my everything. (To be very upfront about this: my little girl has a mother who I get along very well with and will not be replaced. I am looking for someone for me, not a new mother for her and you have to get in pretty deep before you will ever interact with the offspring.) I don't just float through life--I try and actually live it.
I'm not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but like to think that someone doesn't have to be perfect for the world--they just have to fit for you. Like Dr. Seuss said: "we are all a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love." I will make you laugh. I will make you think. Maybe gasp out loud at one of my endless number of crazy stories. I will bring you flowers for no reason. I will try and make you swoon. Most of all, I hope to make you smile.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I'm not a lawyer, nor do I work for a non-profit…shocking, I know. (I do work for the gub'ment, though.) I am a research scientist and very much enjoy being on the bench doing experiments. I was told once that I should write down my stories from the lab as a sitcom a la "The Office.". That's the kind of quirky characters I work with. Like I said, it's one of my passions.

This is my lab in a nutshell: http://xkcd.com/242/. Upturned Microscope pretty much sums up my lab life and the wackos in it.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Being a good Single Dad. Cooking; photography; playing most woodwinds (have 2 clarinets, an oboe and a bassoon in my house right now that are getting a workout); UNO.
Being hyper-perceptive to emotions of others. Damn good memory when it counts. I tell a good story, complete with embellished bad accents, hand and arm waving, and a lot of enthusiasm.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
My eyes, or so I've been told. It's the eyelashes.

I actually think people hear me before they see me...

In the past I wrote waaaaay too much here, so I am going to parse this down to talking points as best I can.

Books: I enjoy them. I have a library card and it gets a workout. Fiction, WWII non-fiction, Sci-Fi, mystery. Currently have a few books in rotation.

Movies and TV: I watch them, although not all that much. Walking Dead, Doctor Who, Big Bang Theory come to mind for TV. Movies lean to old B&W's from the 40's and 50's, especially noir. I'm a guy, so I enjoy action movies, but Mel Brooks, Monty Python and Eddie Izzard might hold higher status. Oh, and I can integrate a Simpsons quote into most any conversation.

Shows can mean so many things: Love the symphony, opera and live jazz. Just went to the Bolshoi when they were in town--want to go again. I need some Shakespeare in my life.

Music: This is all over the place. Jazz and classical are top priorities. Rap and Hip-hop, but only prior to 2001. A singer with soul always resonates with me. I want to hear that growl in their hearts. My little girl's last playlist I put together for her consisted of Stevie Wonder, Janelle Monáe, Barenaked Ladies, Norah Jones, Jesse y Joy and Bruno Mars. And Vivaldi's Four Seasons. All over the place indeed.

Food: I eat. Nothing stops me, except maybe mushrooms. If you can cook Mexican you will win my heart.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
The laughter of my little girl
Music--both playing and listening
My Timbuk2--it's like Felix's Bag of Tricks--with my camera, passport and a good flashlight
Sunshine and the smell of the ocean (I am from CA, after all)
A good pair of running shoes
Memories of old friends long lost. I keep them close.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
How I can explain to my eldest sister that, no, I don't attach human ears to the backs of mice at my work?
Conversely, trying to wrap my head around my sister's theories on the queer body as a form of resistance and the epistemology of a brown body. (She's a professor in California.)
How to be the best father I can.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
I am usually wiped from the week's experiments, so Mexican food and a book or something relaxing. When I don't have my little girl, happy hour with friends from the lab.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Ask and ye shall receive. Go ahead...you know you want to...

Fine, I'll let one out. I've been in so many orchestra pits over my years playing that I enjoy the music of musicals...but I know absolutely nothing about the plots or lyrics. I know the music note for note and my entrances, but never paid attention to what was actually happening on the stage.

Here's one more...my very first memory was riding the Dumbo ride at Disneyland with my Dad when I was 2.
