My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I hate this part and most of what I was going to put here ended up in the following section so instead you get some miscellaneous information about me here.

-I often surprise people with my fairly broad knowledge base, the result of a love of learning and having way too much free time to spend reading.
-I don't have much recollection of the period from late 2003 until late 2005/early 2006 and what I do remember tends to revolve around Everquest and later World of Warcraft.
-I really dislike competing with people I care about, often suggesting activities where we can work together instead.
-I tend to really procrastinate on things I don't really want to do. For example, this section of my profile was blank for about nine months.
-What drove me to study history and international relations was my love of board games such as Risk, Axis and Allies, and Diplomacy. When I told this to a professor who held me in high regard I could visibly see his respect for me ebb away by the expression on his face.
-I value character and being a decent human being much more than success, both in myself and others. Many of the people I highly admire are considered failures by society at large.
-My sense of humor seems to be a little off for most people. Most of my jokes fall flat but people tend to laugh hysterically at things I say in complete seriousness.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I work in a cubicle at a place I like to describe as a post-industrial sweat shop while finishing an M.A. in social science education.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Working useless trivia into conversations.
Making a fool of myself (usually willingly).
Making small talk with complete strangers.
Tying seemingly unrelated pieces of information together.
Just about anything I set my mind to.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I tend to be generally cheerful, polite, and use a lot of self-deprecating humor.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

These lists are by no means complete, but here goes.

Books: Orwell, Tolkien, George Martin, Robert Howard, Neil
Gaiman, Harry Turtledove, Frank Herber, Robert Jordan, Alexandre Dumas...I read a lot of non-fiction as well (mostly history books) but listing authors there isn't nearly as fun. Currently reading a couple of books on south and southeast asian history.

Shows: Current stuff only-- Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, Silicon Valley, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, True Detective, and The Walking Dead
TV General Rule #1: if it gets cancelled before the end of the first season, I probably really liked it.
TV General Rule #2: if it gets cancelled after just 2 or 3 years and is brought back because it became a cult favorite, I probably really liked it from the start.
TV General Rule #3: If it is a foreign concept that has been reworked into a US show, I probably saw the original and liked it more. Exception to this rule: The Office, at least for the first 5-6 years or so.

Music: The Beatles, Queen, The Police, Pixies, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Weezer, Pinback, Maritime, The Shins, Pinback, The Cure, Beirut, Radiohead, The Strokes, Metric, Modest Mouse...

Movies: My favorite films of the past few years have been the Marvel superhero films which culminated in the Avengers, those are the only ones which I consistently made it out to a theater see on a big screen. Longtime favorites include the LoTR films and a lot of sci-fi from the late 70's to early 90's (think Star Wars to Jurassic Park). I also watch a lot of dramas, biopics, and foreign films. With these I tend to enjoy films where people go through some really awful things but in the end come out ok; think along the lines of Hotel Rwanda and The Pianist.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Internet access. (It hurts to admit this)
Receiving praise.
More Books. Seriously.
Quiet time to think and read.
The ability to entertain myself while completing mundane tasks.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Why people send one sentence messages that say absolutely nothing.
If the Germans could have won World War I by adopting the Moltke plan ran rather than Schlieffen plan.
The number 42, life, the universe, and everything.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Relaxing at home with a book or a movie, or maybe meeting my family for dinner.

Offer a few tips to help matches win you over.
You think we may have similar interests and could be friends. People who like board games are especially welcome.
I also really enjoy meeting people with different interests, experiences, and perspectives as they provide opportunity to learn about new things.
Your introductory message will actually serve as an introduction and consist of more than one or two simple sentences. I'm a big believer that the effort someone puts into starting a dialogue is indicative of their interest in the other person.
