I'm a British ex-pat working at CERN and living near Geneva! Always looking for more fun things to do, great people to meet and fascinating places to visit.

I work at CERN as a particle physicist. For the next year or so it's going to be incredibly exciting. I do a bit of outreach when I can, and I can talk for hours about how great physics is. When I can get time away from the lab I try to see as much of the world as possible.

Oh dear, these things always embarrass me. I can cook some nice dishes, I can do all sorts with websites and code. I know some origami.

These days it's probably my fair skin (if I'm in Europe) or my tan (if I'm in the UK) and my English accent (if I'm in the states) or my Americanized accent (if I'm in the UK.)

Erm, books eh? Well some sciencey ones include The Selfish Gene (well, anything by Dawkins), The Feynman Lectures and A Variety of Scientific Experience by Carl Sagan. Literature wise I love anything by Orwell, and Les Misérables has its moments. I really should have read more by this stage in my life, or at least kept hold of all the books I have read.

For movies/films there are too many to mention. I've never really gotten into the huge sagas like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, as life seems too short. But things like Spirited Away and Dogville do it for me. And Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind.

My music collection consists of lots of stuff from the 90s (Portishead, Massive Attack, Radiohead, Manic Street Preachers, Air etc) and some more modern stuff (Arcade Fire, Interpol) as well as some classical stuff. Kathleen Ferrier hits the spot. I've been known to go to the opera and ballet too.

When it comes to food I'm really a novice. Living in France/Switzerland there's obviously lots of nice chocolate, cheese, wine, bread and fondue around, so let's not pretend that I don't eat well! Fresh fruit is a must for me. I can get through the day with it. From time to time I try my hand a new dish. Apparently I can cook Thai green chicken curry. Broccoli is beautiful. Cauliflower is the devil.

Physics and the mysteries of the universe (sometimes the only thing that sends me to sleep, and it sends me to sleep happy!) Where I want to travel to next. Why I have to think about four different timezones, work on four different currencies, hold two visas and two identity cards, and speak 2 1/2 languages to do this job properly. The friends I miss.

There's a tradition we have of going to a different eatery each Friday, then going for a drink, enjoying Lake Geneva at night. When that doesn't happen I sometimes nip back to the UK for the weekend, or just chill out at home, either with friends or with my laptop. Not much of a party goer these days.

Hmm. Get to know me in person first. I have lots to tell. Life is heartbreakingly beautiful.
