My Notes edit

My self-summary

I'm an activist. I grew up Mennonite so my family is pacifist going back several generations. As a teen, I learnt about current affairs from a community radio station, shortwave stations from around the globe, and reading The Economist. In college, I became active working for causes like LGBT rights at Christian colleges, sweatshops, ROTC, Iraq, and more. Now I've launched my own project helping activists use the Internet to be more effective.

As an activist, I've stepped up to be a leader whether it is starting an organization, hosting an anti-Bush rally (Notre Dame commencement), organizing a campaign, or talking to the media.

When I'm not trying to change the world I'm more quiet. I do things on my own like cooking spinach pasta from scratch, playing strategic board games (Risk 2210, Axis and Allies, Settlers of Cattan), reading, carrying 40 pounds of groceries on my bike, playing a simple Phil Ochs song on my guitar, listening to very weak radio stations from far away, watching a movie, or writing an essay on a new idea I have how the internet could help activists. I prefer meaningful conversation, good food, or a good game more than a party.

My idea of adventure includes making up almost all my cooking recipes, trying to revolutionize online activism and help tens of thousands of activists, biking in heavy traffic while taking up the entire lane, a road-trip to close the School of Americas, hitch-hiking, or hopping a train, or going on a date.

What I'm doing with my life

Activism. www.campusactivism.org -- it's all me. Though I'd like it to be other people too.

More recently - working on a website map (and database) of power plants and grassroots groups fighting them. McCain wants 75 new nuke plants. Obama (and McCain) wants "clean coal". What do you want?

I'm really good at

Making sorbet.
Statistics.
Estimating what time it is (within five minutes) without looking at a clock.
Growing basil.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

Tall. Shy. Thinker.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Food: Douse anything with oil, garlic, salt, cayenne, coconut milk, and maybe lemon juice and you are set. Desert: eat chocolate.

Music: recently I've been listening to Runrig (like a scottish U2 with bagpipes that sometimes sings in gaelic) and the Incredible String Band (scottish acoustic psychadelic folk - very original).

Movies: Jesus of Montreal, La Bataille D'Algers.

The six things I could never do without

Internet, berries, chocolate, activism, hope, transistors.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Community. Growing basil indoors over the winter with my grow light and whether it was worth it throwing out my entire crop of insect infested plants (regrowing everything from seed). Elections (Canada and US). Online social networking. The global recession/depression. Nothing (I'm trying meditation so the goal is to think of nothing).

On a typical Friday night I am

Free. Invite me to your activity!

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

I don't get spam because I'm a vegan.

You should message me if

I'm looking for someone who cares deeply about humanity, is striving to make a difference, and holds to progressive or radical views that will get to the roots of social injustice. My match is probably an introvert and independent. I spent four years in graduate school, so I like people who are smart including academics with a practical bent, or non-academics with a critical eye.

I'm a sucker for the algorithm - so anyone with a high score.
