My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Hi. I'm Alan.

I suppose I'm not really the boy next door, unless the boy next door was a ponytailed, tennis-playing computer geek.

I'm a Pittsburgh transplant; moved here in '99, and can't imagine living anywhere but Seattle. Okay, maybe Melbourne.

I play a lot of tennis, ski and bike a little, like to swim but rarely do. I'm the sweatiest tennis player I know. I haven't had a gym membership in several years, but manage to stay reasonably fit.

I have the world's best dog, a Rhodesian Ridgeback named Milo who keeps me sane. I'm allergic to cats. So is he, I think.

I love to cook, and occasionally do it well. I love experimenting, which can be hit-or-miss, but usually closer to hit. I'm better at the big meals rather than the daily cooking. I love having friends over for an evening of cooking, eating & drinking -- especially now that it's grilling season.

I appreciate craft -- I roast my own coffee, enjoy making pasta from scratch, and sometimes make my own ginger beer. I've even made an end table and the shelves that are in my living room. I'd love to learn to weld.

I love to travel. Anywhere with a beach to lay on, a pool to swim in, a court to play on, or a culture to experience.

I just took the Myers-Briggs test. I'm an INTP -- it was a surprisingly accurate description, some of which scared the pants off of me as I start thinking about dating. It also suggested that my possible matches are Barack Obama (ENFJ) and Steve Jobs (ENTJ). I'm pretty sure neither one is available though, hence this profile.

I'm just getting back into the swing of things after a marriage that ended unexpectedly and a rather long healing period that followed. I was really not looking forward to dating again, and avoided it as long as I could. But so far, I'm enjoying my time here on okcupid. I like chatting with people online and meeting them in person. Maybe some of those will become friends; maybe one of those will become something more. In the meantime, I'll try and enjoy the ride.

I generally like my life, and am looking to share it with someone who likes his. I'd like to find someone who is passionate about his life, and wants to share it with me as much as I would share mine with him, as much as we'd create a life together. Someone who is brighter than the average bulb, and at least somewhat in shape. Someone to talk about possibly having kids with. I'm not sure how a cat lover or vegan would work into that plan, but who really knows? Life is strange and that's what makes it exciting.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I'm a web programmer whose freelance business has turned into a small company. I work at home, and can't imagine ever working in an office again. It can be incredibly stressful at times, but is also incredibly rewarding.
I’m really good at

Books: I'm not a great reader. I usually read before bed, and then only read a couple of pages till I zonk out. But I loved the Omnivore's Dilemma. Augusten Burroughs & David Sedaris are always fun to read. I just read Ender's Game, which I really enjoyed until I found out the author is a homophobic douche. About to start a collection by David Foster Wallace.

Movies: I love going to the Big Picture Show or Cinerama downtown. It makes going to a movie feel like an event. Some favorites: The Wizard of Oz, Willy Wonka, Better Off Dead, The Hudsucker Proxy, Run Lola Run, Memento, Donnie Darko, Billy Elliot, Beautiful Thing, The Bubble

Shows: I don't mind some quality time with the pooch on the couch. Some faves: Grimm, Monday Mornings, Glee, Elementary, Downton, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, The Amazing Race, Top Chef & So You Think You Can Dance. Don't like the real housewives of anywhere.

Live Shows: This isn't a category, but I enjoy live theater quite a bit. Modern dance especially, but also musicals, 'straight' theater, as well as an occasional live concert.

Music: The Pet Shop Boys, Philip Glass & Laurie Anderson are probably my all-time favorites. And I'm gay, so Adele, and pretty much anything on C89.5. During the work day, I listen to a lot of electronica/trance/lounge music, as lyrics tend to get in the way of working.

Food: Um. I like food, unless it's in the form of The Cheesecake Factory or McDonald's. I will confess I am not upset that Chipoltle just opened on Broadway. One of my favorite meals ever was at Marjorie, although I think I like Zoë better now. I eat at Skillet semi-regularly because it's in my hood. I recently learned to love Korean food. I'm dying to try Joule. I'd love to work my way through Seattle's "Eater 38", but they keep changing faster than I can keep up. Another reason why I love Seattle.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
wondering why I didn't plan anything for Friday night.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Sometimes I listen to A Prairie Home Companion and enjoy it.

You made it this far down on the page. Especially if you find any of this even vaguely smart, sexy, or interesting. Bonus if you're vaguely smart, sexy, or interesting yourself.
