I am geeky, curious, and laid back.

My Self-Summary

I just recently moved to the DC Metro area for a job. I'm kind of paving my way into my future at the moment. I just graduated with a BS (I have always found that abbreviation hilarious) from JMU and am embarking on a career in the wild world of software engineering. It could be worse, right? I promise not to talk about it too much.

I usually drink my coffee black and pull ridiculous hours doing what I enjoy. I'm not afraid of a long walk to avoid driving somewhere or waiting on the bus (especially if it's overcast). I can be pretty quiet at first, but I really open up once I'm comfortable with the people I'm around.

I'm not really looking for anything on this site, but you never know where you'll meet a friend.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm attending daily meetings, writing programs, being yanked from one project to another, wearing collared shirts with ties. All that "adult stuff". It's a lot different from college, but it really doesn't feel THAT different. Once I get on a roll with a project, I just want to keep working on it until I get to a great stopping point. This doesn't mesh well with a salaried plan. Oh well!

I'm also working on research trying to accelerate shortest path programs over continuum space via vector processing on GPUs. So if you're still reading this, I guess you're not afraid of that. Ask me about it if you'd like to know more! I'm working on this because I haven't totally ruled out going to grad school and getting into research. If I really enjoy the whole having a job thing, I'll stick with it since it easily affords me a comfortable lifestyle (though obviously that's not everything).

I’m really good at

Making sure the coffee pot is always full. Enjoying the drive and the adventure of finding myself when I've taken a wrong turn and am totally lost. Organizing things (studying sorting and searching algorithms will do that to you). Staying up all night.

I'm a good listener even though I'm not a good sharer at first. I love listening to people rant about anything. If somebody needs me, I'm only a phone call away. I'm also really patient. On second thought, those two those two things are probably connected.

The first things people usually notice about me

People usually notice, right away, that I'm really pale and blond. I make a lot of jokes about it so that nobody feels uncomfortable asking about it. It has come in handy when people are trying to find me since I tend to stand out like a light bulb in a large crowd of people.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books:
I enjoy science fiction, both "hard" sci-fi and the lighter variety. I've enjoyed almost any book that doesn't start out incredibly slow. As long as a book is able to make me care about its characters or intellectually intrigue me, I'll read it.

Movies:
Lately I've just been browsing through the Drama section at blockbuster picking up anything that looks interesting.

Food:
Ever since discovering the salad bar in the dinning hall, I've been in love with baby spinach salads. I don't like it when fruits and vegetables are cooked/steamed into kind of a limp mass, they need to be crisp and fresh. I don't like to eat a lot of meat at any given time, but it's a tasty part of my diet. I believe almost anything can be made to taste good with the right seasoning.

Music:
Lately I've been listening to a lot of Radiohead, Venetian Snares, and Matt Elliott. Anything that can be used as background noise when working.

The six things I could never do without

1. Friends - I would go crazy without the friends I have. Whether things are good or bad, they always make them better.

2. Coffee - This is the only think keeping me going half the time.

3. Computers - Really, have you thought of a world without them? Everything is so automated these days, it gives us more free time. And me a pay check.

4. Public Transit - I'd love a world where I never had to worry about finding a parking spot. I guess it's also "green".

5. Glasses - I really wouldn't be functional without them. I always think I'd be fine until that second I can't find them.

I think that about covers the gist of it.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

What am I going to say at today's SCRUM meeting? What should I cook for dinner? Would bacon and pancakes be an appropriate dinner? Have I caught up on my shows? Why won't my code work? I should make time to read before bed tonight.

On a typical Friday night I am

Unwinding after work and just relaxing in the calm of the weekend. After that I'll do some combination of watching a movie, reading a book, goofing around on the internet, and/or with friends. Generally something far too geeky to announce to the public.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I don't feel like I'm 23. That just feels older than I am. Maybe I haven't lived enough in the past few years or something.

You should message me if

You want to. What have you got to lose? Really, I like talking to people. Don't be shy. Especially if you naturally are shy.
