I am iconoclastic, enthusiastic, and happy.

My Self-Summary

Probably the single most important fact about me, I'm a single dad. My daughter is 5 and 1/2 and she's basically the most important person in my life, bar none. I have her 1/2 of the time. If you have children, that is a big bonus.

Other facts, I've traveled the world, I'm a photographer, I have been a lefty political activist, I'm starting an internet company.

My profile says I'm not spiritual (those icons on the bottom), but I would strongly disagree. "Spiritual not religious" is a good stab at it. I meditate, do yoga blah de blah.

Ok, I'm going to rant about this some more. I just got this question:
"How important is religion/God in your life?"
1. Religion is not anything like spirituality.
2. Answering the question "do you believe in God" is USELESS unless you define what you mean by the word God.
Do I believe in an old man on a cloud? No.
Do I believe that the only truth is in the bible? No
Do I believe that the universe itself is inherently divine. Yes. I could call that God, but if I say "I believe in God" someone who thinks that there is a Father Son and Holy Ghost and the only way to the father is through the son might get the wrong idea about what I do and don't believe.

I am "ethnically Jewish" I don't practice, and never have. Both of my parents were raised Jewish, I was raised Unitarian. (Ever hear Utah Phillips talk about being run out of town by the Unitarians? They burned a question mark on his lawn.)

What I’m doing with my life

I've been a photographer for the past 7 years. I like it, and feel very lucky to not have a 9 to 5 office type job.

Now, I am starting a dot com. It is fun to have a new challenge, and the potential rewards are great. (So far the actual rewards are not so great)

I’m really good at

Photography
Playing with children.
Travel.
Thinking (don't laugh, not everyone is)

The first things people usually notice about me

I have no idea. Does this mean I am not self aware? I hope not. You should ask them what they notice about me.

I'm reminded of an interview with Steve Carell. About his character in the office, he says "Everyone knows someone like that, and if you don't, then you probably are that person."

I hope I am not THAT person, but I am still not sure what most people think of me.

Now I'm remembering a funny quote from a teacher of mine. He was making fun of how people always worry "what will they think of me?" He rejoined; "Who had time to think about you?"

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I am a great science fiction fan in movies and books (though there are not that many great science fiction movies in my opinion)

Pardon me while I name authors instead of books.

Neil Gaiman,
Ursula K. Le Guin
Barbara Kingsolver
kurt vonnegut
Peter Carey
Amy Tan
Alice Walker
JK Rowling (reading her to my daughter and loving it)

Music is very important to me. I would not say I like all kinds of music, but my taste are wide, and they get wider all the time. I've spent a life time enjoying crunchy hippie music like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, etc... I like a lot of KFOG "alternative" type music, but more and more I find myself really pleased by music I used to hate or ignore, like I'm starting to get the appeal of both country AND heavy metal, I'm more into Jazz than ever, and just by random chance I'm listening to Mendelssohn right now.

Ok, here is an overkill list of some of my favorite music:
Aimee Mann
Alanis Morissette
Alex Heffes

The six things I could never do without

My daughter
My friends
High Speed Internet
My Cameras
podcasts and audio books
burritos

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Making the world a better place.

My goal for starting the dot com I mentioned, I want to make enough money so I can travel the world doing self funded freelance photojournalism projects about the good things that people are doing in the world.

People like Wangari Maathai (won the Nobel prize for planting 10 million trees in Africa) or Amory Lovins (knows how to solve global warming while making society a better place for everyone to live in AND making business more money)

On a typical Friday night I am

If I'm not photographing a wedding I'm probably watching a movie or hanging with friends.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I used to think I was really smart. Now, I think I'm above average half of the time. Is that private? It's self disparaging, but is that the same thing?

You should message me if

You should message me if you want to hear from me at all. I've taken a step back from online dating. I am not contacting anyone, but I do respond to people who contact me.

My ideal partner is a single mom who lives in Oakland, Berkeley, or Hayward.

I am willing to consider other people, so if my profile is tugging at your heart let me know.
