Ph.D. + work + blogging + traveling +
trying new things.
About a year ago I moved to Tokyo (from Melbourne) for my Ph.D
. I study programming mainly, but also biology,
economics, design thinking, linguistics, and Japanese. And
everything else I can find. I have a job doing the same thing. I
work from home and it's awesome. I used to be a game programmer and
that was pretty good too, but I like not being in an office
writing and I write a blog about
if you are the stalky kind). It got
me invited to teach in Stockholm last year :> Stockholm is
I travel a lot. Sometimes too much.
My hobbies are photography, dancing, DJing (but I'm awful at it
:O), alcoholic picnics, cafe hunting, and maybe I'll try to learn
skateboarding soon. And fashion design. Maybe I should also take
gaming up again. Kinda looking for new hobbies... anyone want to
take dancing/baking classes together? (not at the same time, I
don't think that kind of class exists).
Yeah, I have trouble focusing on one thing. I'm tasting as much of
The Universe as I can. Om nom nom.
My topic is about designing ways to make DNA
analysis more cost and time efficient. When it is, biologists can
provide better personalized medicine, but we will also better
understand how to modify and improve our species.
Did you know there are DNA "printers" being
developed? And genome designing software... I think when we
understand things well enough, we will be able to modify our own
DNA from the comfort of our couches on a daily basis. This isn't
just nerdy stuff - imagine the cool cosmetic things we will be able
to do. I think it will take fashion into new dimensions.
