My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Originally from Southern California, spent a couple years in Boston and Freiburg im Breisgau for university (studied theater and German), also lived in Munich for a little while, also ran out of money and ideas and had to move home for a studying in Berlin. Really into spicy food, theater/film/artsy things, books/newspapers, wandering around and looking at stuff, photography, vaguely well done crime tv, German stuff, languages in general, the Daily Show and Colbert Report, and puppies. Especially puppies.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I moved to Berlin in 2012 to start an MA program in a field that sort of mixes together history, art, education, tolerance, multicultural studies, and probably lots of other things. No, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. Could end up in museums, publishing, film, tv, (international) non-profits...I have no idea. Right now I do a lot of translation and editing work...and yoga, and cooking, and reading Game of Thrones. I am particularly good at reading Game of Thrones.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
talking really fast. getting lost. procrastinating. having strong opinions. accidentally spending the entire day playing with my art supplies and then looking up and realizing it's dark outside.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
the crazy curly hair. my whole life. at home near LA, very obviously a Jew-fro, in Germany people tend to think I'm Italian or Spanish.
this changed a bit after I cut it all off a year or so ago, but I still sometimes get Spanish tourists coming up to me on the street asking for directions. in Spanish.

if I'm in a public place and alone, waiting for someone, etc, I tend to be reading. I always have a book in my bag. If I can fit two, then one English, one German so I can switch off if I get bored and/or frustrated.

I'm a critical, debate-y kind of person, and to some people this comes across as overly aggressive, mean, etc. This is never, ever what I'm shooting for, obviously. I'm a very passionate, dedicated person; if I really like something, then I REALLY like it, and I put my whole self into it. I'm not political in a policy wonk sort of way, but people definitely tend to figure out rather speedily that I Have Very Strong Opinions.

Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Nepalese...spicy. And if it's not spicy, it should be covered in cheese.

Recently devoured the first two books in Lev Grossman's "The Magicians" trilogy and "Of Human Bondage" by Somerset Maugham, which I am still not comfortable pronouncing out loud. I like intelligent fantasy, history, short stories, bildungsromans, classics...a lot of things. Read a lot of newspapers, news magazines, etc, in English, German...It would be nice if the New Yorker, the Atlantic, the New York Times, and die Zeit could all deliver for free. Reading online just isn't the same.

Have a slight problem with crime tv. Criminal Minds, Tatort, Sherlock, Inspector Lewis...but will also gladly watch Arrested Development for days, over and over and over...also, Eddie Izzard stand up. Recently have become one of Those People who won't shut up about Game of Thrones.

I've been to 3 Belle and Sebastian concerts, two in LA and one in Munich. Also saw Ben Folds in Munich. Saw St. Vincent when she was in Berlin recently! Generally love jazz, indie/pop stuff, folk...At the moment am really into Father John Misty, Dr. Dog, the Inside Llewyn Davis soundtrack...and bands I've always loved like the Decemberists and the Mountain Goats. And classic oldies from the 30s-60s. Etc. Nothing beats Fred Astaire or the Supremes, generally speaking.

Last movie I saw in theatres might have been the Artist? I really liked it, but I LOVED Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. LOVED.
-Note. This is no longer true. The last movie I saw in theaters was Grand Budapest Hotel, and it was fantastic. So was Inside Llewyn Davis. But I'd really like to work through a list of older classic movies I still for some reason haven't seen...Double Indemnity, North by Northwest, Vertigo, stuff like that...
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
-friends, family, dog. you know.
-sight = reading, writing, exploring
-Indian food. and coffee. also cheese. and often tomatoes.
-notebook in my bag.
-freedom of speech.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
International/domestic (US) human/women's/LGBTQ rights. feel very, very strongly about these things.

How many choices people make in their lives...little ones, big ones, and any of them can lead you in a totally different direction, and it's impossible to know where ahead of time.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Getting dinner with friends and talking for hours, at a movie/performance/show of some sort and getting drinks after, cooking dinner with friends and drinking cheap wine, cooking dinner for myself and curling up with a cup of tea and crime tv on the internet...tends to depend on how shitty the weather is ;)
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I can spend hours looks at captioned pictures of animals on the internet. HOURS. Will never not be funny.

Witty banter is your thing.

You laugh easily and well.

You're also a driven, intense sort of person trying to learn to relax and chill more.

You don't mind a little chaos.
