I am, at heart, an academic. Imagine a professor in a corduroy jacket with leather elbows smoking a pipe, listening to jazz music and going on about the merits and downfalls of some social order or another. I am exactly like that. Except that I don't do any of those things. So really I'm nothing like that, though if you knew somebody like that you say to me "you remind me of that guy". That being said, I'm also a bit geeky in a more modern, computers-and-obscure-music kind of a way.
I'm a generally very laid-back person, and I feel I've successfully gotten to "this isn't that important" without crossing over into "I don't care". That being said, there's a right time and place for everything, and that includes being particular over the details. On the other hand, there's no time or place for answering the phone when you're in the shower or on the toilet, and only the most exceptional of things worth interrupting dinner or a conversation for a mere phone call. I like to stay calm and relaxed about things and try to think things through first. I have no reservations about discussing religion or politics with strangers (I'm told that's very French Canadian of me), though I also don't believe that there's a single "right answer" - and when I do, I don't assume that I've got better access to it than you do. Suffice it to say that discussing things is one of my favourite activities. I guess I'm a bit old-fashioned in these ways.
I give most things one try at least once, I love naps, I'm patient even with idiots, and I have a great sense of direction. I'm pretty good in the kitchen, I take the stairs two steps at a time, in the spring time I keep nuts in pockets for the squirrels, and I sometimes watch movies knowing (or because) the movie is crap. I knit, partly because I think that in this world where everyone deconstructs and destroys and questions and tears down it's important to make new things to bring back in the world, though mostly I knit because they just don't make the kinds of things I like to wear. I generally have instant respect (at least to some degree, on some level) for people who can make or fix things.
I am eccentric, intellectual, and geeky
