I am achin', shakin', breakin', and like humans do.

My Self-Summary

So, which way to go with the opening line? The ever popular "I hate writing about myself," or that ubiquitous classic, "I never know what to put in these things?" So indecisive!

I'm Dan. I'm intelligent, spontaneous, fun, and sarcastic, just like everyone else on the Internet!

This thing will be coming together patchwork, hopefully not at the expense of a decent flow. But probably. (Too late?) If you get bored, you can watch this!

I am pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, anti-capital punishment, pro-right to die, anti-telling people what to do with their bodies/lives in general. There was a time when this may have said "Religion is okay." Now, I'm not so sure. I don't judge (regardless of what Mrs. Myers and Briggs would have you think), and I don't peddle my beliefs. I sound about a billion times more serious right now than I actually am, but these are some of my core principles and I think they should be apparent. Yeah. Oh, and I'm more interested in what's going on inside your head than what you've got holding it up.

It's easier and more fun if we just talk a bit instead of trying to summarize ourselves in a few paragraphs, yeah? No? Fine: Pink Floyd, guitar, music theory, Bob Dylan, The Decemberists, The Office, Metallica (pre-suck era), The Pixies, Soundgarden, Audioslave, The Presidents of the United States of America, Dog Day Afternoon, Scrubs, video games, hockey, skydiving (soon, so soon), Weird Al Yankovich, Somethingawfuldotcom, Miles Davis, Queen, Mitch Hedberg, Shaun of the Dead, Zach Galifianakis, The Kids in the Hall, gym, Kurt Vonnegut, Albert Camus, numbers, Tolkien, words, John Coltrane, INTERNETS, Pearl Jam, Tool, Guinness, Voltaire, The Usual Suspects, They Might Be Giants, Fear and Loathing, Bill Hicks, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, chess, Calexico, Spacehog, Grateful Dead, stream of consciousness list-making, sleep!

Recently promoted and working too much. But I love it. Also trying to get back into guitar, teach myself piano based on general music knowledge learned with guitar, and catch back up on my reading. Not enough hours in a day.

My three adjectives used to be "pacifist," "atheist," and "humanist," all of which are still true to various degrees. Slightly lighter on the pacifism side, little heavier on the atheism side. Approaching anti-theism, I'd say. Humanism is the fulcrum. Now there are David Byrne lyrics up there, and they look really dumb because of OKC's draconian text limitations. Pretend that they say "achin', shakin', and breakin', like humans do."

Are you pretending?

I think I'll do more of this later.

Oh, and I'm an INTJ, for those of you who find extremely broad categorization and acronyms interesting.

Voila.

What I’m doing with my life

Moved from the woods of Vernon down to Hoboken over the summer. Working as an accountant in Franklin Lakes and aiming for my MBA and CPA over the next few years, thanks to Medco's fantastic tuition reimbursement program. After that, it's wide open. And that's great.

I’m really good at

Numbers, words, music. Hopefully chess, someday, but I've put that away for a while.

Blending in among conservatives, evidently. What a wonderful pet to have. Though I can't do it at extended clips without a shower and/or enema.

The first things people usually notice about me

I am one tall, skinny boy.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I'm a little weary of listing things right now. I will recommend, for your listening pleasure, The Decemberists, Iron & Wine, Loch Lomond, and The Dandy Warhols. I can listen to Paperback Writer at any time, sing along, and instantly be in a good mood. The Legionnaire's Lament, too. Music is MAGIC.

Yep, I sure do watch movies.

I'm currently reading God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything by Christopher Hitchens. This possibly explains my really awesome see-saw metaphor from earlier.

I also eat food! I'll try just about anything. Somehow, I doubt you care very much what I eat. Opportunity to save effort... taken.

The six things I could never do without

Music, the world at my fingertips, an indelible sense of humor, books, friends, self-improvement.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Everything, and very randomly. Music, chess, and literature more than most, probably. Polymathy will someday be mine.

On a typical Friday night I am

Elated.

That's about the only thing that all Fridays have in common. I like to mix it up.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

If you ever step on my patch, I'll bring you down.

I don't take this very seriously. :( I feel like I'm talking to an answering machine. Only worse.

This site has helped me realize that... ...I really like pictures of girls shooting pool. Feels good to get THAT out.

Oh, I know. I keep a fortune (as in fortune cookie, not large sum of money) hanging off of the sun visor in my car. It tells me I am permanently "heading in the right direction." It's my little piece of foma.

You should message me if

You're down with Bokonon.

You know who Bokonon is.

You live in or near Hoboken. I will need some familiar people down that way in just a few months! edit: now.

You want to talk like two human people, and not like some guy typing words under little pink headings.

...point your AIMbots at: dpowens05.

Or message on here, I suppose. I'll most likely reply, and just think of all the totally amazing things you might then find yourself having said directly to you! I'll be nice.
