When I find something great I find whoever made it and consume
their entire oeuvre. So for me it's not usually individual works of
art, it's people.
Artists: I like the art that some friends produce, but it's
pointless to name-drop. For known artists, I'm a bit obsessed with
Books: My youth was typical geek fare, all science fiction and
fantasy. I read a little too much Asimov & definitely too much
Tolkien. These days, I gravitate towards non-fiction -- seriously,
the plots are more fantastical. Books that changed my life: The
Gift, and Trickster Makes This World, both by Lewis Hyde. A long
time ago, Chomsky. I read a lot of economics, computer, and
business stuff lately. On a whim I just picked up a volume of
ridiculous stories of POWs escaping from WWII military prisons.
Same guy who wrote The Great Escape.
TV: is usually evil. But there's Jon Stewart, David Simon (The
Wire, Homicide, etc.), our nearly departed Breaking Bad, and I may
be finally succumbing to binge-watching Netflix shows like House of
Cards (I think it's a bit too much time to spend, though)
Film: Some favorite directors: Errol Morris, Sergio Leone, Alfonso
Cuaron. Sarah Polley recently broke my brain with Stories We
Music: lately - Arcade Fire, Glitch Mob, Foster the People, ALT-J
Food: Nowadays it's low carb or slow carb, so sugary desserts are
out and homemade bison chili is in. (I don't expect you to follow
my diet, though.)
