Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Hey, I'm Alex. Nice to meet you! Let's have have another try at
this 'online dating' thing, this time with at least 99% less
So. I'm a grad student working on my PhD in engineering. Being a
huge nerd comes with the territory. That means I'm into a
(stereo?)typical mix of science, technology, video games, and
computer-related things. I really like it when I successfully
repair Things, even though buying a new Thing would have been
quicker and/or cheaper.
I have an artsy side too: playing the piano and the viola,
composing, and sometimes even making an Art of the picture kind. I
crocheted a giant tube sock once and used it to keep my front door
area warm during winter.
I dance. Swing is my thing: Lindy Hop, Charleston, and some Blues
and Balboa (aka the 'Bouncy Hug'). I'll be branching out to some
other things soon for variety. I'm secretly jealous of my
Portuguese friend's salsa abilities, and I'm afraid I'll never be
able to get my hips quite as mobile as his.
Other body things: Pilates for posture and flexibility. I currently
suck at yoga though. Life is a constant struggle between how much I
love having visible abs, and how much I love having pizza (the
pizza's got the upper hand for now, don't get your hopes up).
I like exploring the city with people. Walking around together is a
great catalyst for conversation.
People tell me I can be funny and quick-witted. I'm a punslinger. I
used to make them deliberately and ironically to mess with my
friends, but now they come seemingly automatically at inopportune
moments. Pls help. I like dark humour, when present company is
comfortable with it. I'm of the opinion that serious issues can
often be picked apart and analyzed through the lens of
I'm not afraid of saying what's on my mind if I'm feeling shitty
about something or it's bothering me. Maybe it's my Russian
upbringing, but I find being (respectfully) direct and honest to be
the way to go. "How are you doing?" is one of my least favourite
questions, because I'm always tempted to give an essay instead of a
So my goal here is to find someone to have an awesome connection
with - the kind of effortless magic where you felt like you did
almost no work at all and everything went your way. We all live for
those moments, right? I don't expect to find Ms. Right on here (it
would be nice though), but a compatible kindred spirit to spend
time together with would be great.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
My current mission is writing a giant piece of software by myself
and then someday to write a gianter manuscript telling the school
about it and why I should get to be called 'Doctor'. In the
meantime, I write less-gianter papers about my work so the school
can pay to fly me to places to give powerpoint presentations on
those papers. Grad life.
I'm a creative type - INTP if you're into the whole Myers-Briggs
thing. I've decided that after I graduate and leave the intensity
of a decade plus of university, I want to try my hand at the
'starving artist' schtick and find some people to develop indie
video games with. Who knows, it might turn into a non-starving
artist gig if it goes well :) Gainful employment is always a
fallback option, and there's no shortage of work in my field.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Staying in school, apparently. I'm also pretty okay at playing the
piano and doing other things musical or rhythmic. There's also
design, programming, figuring out technology, and the other
occupational hazards that come with my line of study.
The first things people usually notice about me

Height. Eyes. Hint of a Russian accent, especially when I start
talking fast. Some say I look intense and/or serious, but that's
just my default resting face. Honest.

I've read a lot of sci-fi to pass the time when I commuted to
school for 8 years. If you're into anything written by Robert J.
Sawyer or John Scalzi, I'm sure we'd have lots to mutually geek out
TV and Movies: Yes.
Food: I don't like seafood. While I eat meat, I'm not in love with
it or anything. If I had the means, I could happily eat at
Vegetarian Haven on Baldwin every day. I'd really miss bacon,
Board games: I've been going out with friends to these new places
popping up over Toronto that let you play board games while
consuming caffeinated/alcoholic beverages. It's a great time, and
people keep showing me cool new games.
Computer/console games: I've taken a liking to more indie-type
games lately and avoided the blockbuster AAA releases. First-person
shooters are my favourite. I still play Doom (from 1993) as the
community keeps putting out neverending awesome content to this
day. I like to play fun games with people too. Not ashamed to admit
enjoying playing with a Wii.
Music: I don't actively go out of my way to listen to music, which
is weird because of my musical background. Having said that, I dig
almost everything by Daft Punk and Infected Mushroom. (late)
Beethoven and Chopin are my classical bros.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Way too much. I'm a chronic overthinker and often a perfectionist,
but I'm working on fixing that.
I also idly make up stories/timelines for the squirrels and pigeons
I pass on my walks to and from school. Do you think the regular
black pigeons ostracize the cream/white-coloured ones?
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I love the McDonalds Dollar Menu
