My Self-Summary

Words cannot come close to accuracy, so I will be using them sparingly. I have realized that the more we try to define ourselves, the further we tend to distort (albeit unintentionally). Complex creatures are inherently indefinable. (I hope this doesn't make me sound too serious. Trust me, I'm not). Comments about myself will be kept to a minimum. Nevertheless, for practical purposes I shall trot out some general requirements:
Only critical thinkers need apply. I'm also looking for someone who stays healthy/ keeps in shape (I'm not a gym rat, but I try to keep a relatively healthy diet, work out at least four times a week, and ride my bike daily). If you play lots of video games, watch lots of television, or think that Will Ferrell movies are funny, then we probably won't click. If the last book you read can be purchased at a supermarket, then you should probably steer clear of me. If you don't read at all, then don't even bother. If subtitles bother you, or you find art-house boring, then I would make for an aggravating companion.
If, on the other hand, you enjoy life's many simple (and complex) pleasures, if you have a mind that wanders and a will that follows, if you are always laughing and rarely sulking, if you are not intimidated by big words or by opinions that conflict with yours, if you are a seeker of challenges and an avoider of banality, if the "big question mark of life" constantly casts its shadow upon you yet fails to break your spirit, basically: if you are an exception to the rule, then you just might be able to handle me...

What I’m doing with my life

I'm taking a break from grad school and teaching community college (at least a year). My main interests lie in Aesthetics, Existentialism, Phenomenology, and Eastern thought. My favorite philosophers include Sartre, Kant, Heidegger, Nietzsche, and Plato (recently, also Derrida and Levinas). Eventually, I want to teach full-time.
I am also involved in a local experimental/noise/live electronic music project (we're called The They). (vocals, synthesizer, guitar, harmonica, recorder, loops, programming, samples, electric piano, video editing).

I’m really good at

Listening, talking, walking, breathing, running in place, understanding what really inarticulate people are trying to say (this is really a curse sometimes), cartwheels, dancing like I don't think anyone is watching, naughty things, being quiet during a movie, finding roadblocks, finding ways around road blocks, writing really silly profiles on hippy dating sites.

The first things people usually notice about me

Besides how absolutely brilliant and handsome I am, probably my modesty.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

books: Hermann Hesse, Kurt Vonnegut, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Franz Kafka, Henry Miller, Charles Bukowski, Oscar Wilde, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, and many, many more....
movies: Chinatown, Apocalypse Now, Amores Perros, anything Bergman, Fellini, Lynch, or Hitchcock. Touch of Evil, Brazil, Ikiru (anything Kurosawa), Suspiria, Taxi Driver.
food: Greek, Cajun, BBQ, Seafood, Italian, Tex-Mex, Indian, Sushi, Vietnamese.

The six things I could never do without

1. sustenance (no shit!)
2. friends
3. family
4. art
5. philosophy
6. music
(I'm not sure that I like referring to these as "things")

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Besides the baser, naughty stuff, I tend to dwell on philosophical dilemmas pertaining to art, literature, music, religion, values, subjectivity, inter-subjectivity, life, sex, culture, love, being, nothingness, and existence.

On a typical Friday night I am

Fridays are rarely "typical". I might be hanging out with friends at a quiet dive bar (or occasionally a nice wine bar), catching a symphony, playing a gig, chilling at home with a book or a movie, catching up on work, late-night dining, or even heading over to Austin for the weekend.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I'm not a very private person. Ask me anything; I'll tell you the truth whether you like it or not. But you do have to ask me first...

You should message me if

If you made it this far without moving on to the next bozo, then why not?
