socially conscious, politically liberal, and entirely nerdy
My self-summary Propose an edit
Hi, there. Just moved to Ohio, so here I am trying to meet folks. I
like it in Buckeye-land, even if everybody's obsessed with that
silly football team (kidding...kinda). Graduated from Princeton
four years ago, have been a vagabond of sorts since - lived in
China for a year doing economics research, grad school for a year
in Philadelphia, and have since lived in Louisville, KY and now
Ohio doing the corporate thing to pay off school loans and save up
money. Am currently living in Coshocton, though I'll likely be
relocating to Columbus sometime this winter.
If you were to get to know me, you’d soon discover that I’m really
passionate about social inequality and always
love to meet people with similar viewpoints and also the
motivation/know-how to do something about it. I can see myself
devoting a chunk of my career toward that issue.
To that end, I think I’ve always had an acute social conscience, even
staging my first hunger strike at five upon realizing there were
kids out there with nothing to eat. You can imagine how thrilled my
mom was to hear my demands that my mac and cheese be sent to
Africa. Granted, I didn’t have the resolve at that point to carry
out the strike for more than a few minutes, but I think I made my
point!
These days, I’ve got a corporate job in which I’m getting to do
some pretty cool stuff, but I’m saving as much as I can because I
really see myself in five years or so leaving the corporate thing
for non-profit, and my hope is that
I’ll have enough saved by then to perhaps even start my own
organization in some depressed part of the country. I don’t yet
know what exactly I’d do, but I’ve really been inspired by some of
what Paul Farmer has accomplished with Partners in Health. Also,
I’ve recently become interested in microfinancing and the Grameen
Bank. I’m not saying it’d be easy to build such awesome
organizations, but my dream job would be to do so.
What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit
I do corporate finance stuff. It's fun, but I'm looking forward to
switching over to non-profit in a couple of years.
That's what I really, really care about :-)
I'm really good at Propose an edit
Instead of saying what I'm good at, how about some nerdy things I
can do:
- I know pi to 25 decimal places.
- I've memorized every word of a few hundred songs. Can't remember
important things like paying bills, but I've got 'Barbie Girl' by
Aqua down pat.
- I'm pretty damn good for a lao wai at speaking Chinese.
- Using my fingers, I can count in binary to 32 in about 5 seconds.
Hot, right? And, as somebody on this site told me, there are 10
types of people in the world - those who understand binary, and
those who don't ;-)
- I know all the major league baseball teams active in any of the
last thirty years in alphabetical order.
- I'm really friggin' good at doing math in my head. I've gotten a
lot of 'holy shit' responses when given problems to mentally
solve.
- Ooohhh, and I'm really good at number theory stuff. I finished
3rd in the country in a big number theory competition in high
school. ;-)
(Note: you might be thinking 'why the hell would a guy on a
pseudo-dating site admit all of that nerdy stuff...this guy is
_never_ going to get laid.'
My response is that I'm not on here to get laid. I think of the
above instead as a filter. If you think it's pretty weird, we
probably wouldn't hit it off. If, instead, your reaction is 'holy
smokes, I've been searching my whole life for a guy who can count
binary,' then I'm pretty sure we'd get along just fine).
The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit
I often get pensive about things like social inequality. Probably
too much so.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food Propose an edit
Books - Probably most interested in books on social inequality. And
also those that show the collision of different cultures. Example -
Three Cups
of Tea. The
Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down. Any of Paul Farmer's stuff. River Town.
And cool economics books - Freakonomics is a cool mainstream
book that I like. So is Random Walk Down Wall
Street. The Black Swan. Jeffrey Sachs'
books.
I also get into some of CS Lewis' books - Problem of Pain is awesome.
Mere Christianity, etc.
In terms of literature, I love Catch-22, Stranger in a Strange
Land. Waiting for the Barbarians. I'm more a non-fiction guy, but
I'm always open for some cool literature book recommendations
:-)
Movies - I love comedies of any sub-genre - Ferrel/Stiller college
humor (Zoolander, Wedding Crashers), romantic comedies . Don't
think I have a favorite per se, but to give you an idea, I like
Zoolander, Dumb and Dumber, How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, Wedding
Crashers...I definitely look at movies as my zoning out time.
Music - I like a lot of stuff, but my ipod has a lot of Killers,
U2, Linkin Park, Cranberries, Nada Surf, Aqua, Paramore and
Coldplay.
Food - Anything but seafood.
The six things I could never do without Propose an edit
I think I could do without most _things_. I couldn't do without
friends and family. I'll have to return to this question...

What I'm going to do with my life. What more I can do with it.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here Propose an edit
I'm a med school dropout. Did just over a year when I finally
realized 'wow, I'll be 40 before I can finally pay off all my debt
and start hospitals in developing countries. OR...I could go into
finance, pay off my college/med school debt by 26, and save money
to do the non-profit thing by 30.'
And in case you're wondering, I did finish paying off my debt -
both college AND med school - last month :-)
You should message me if Propose an edit
I'm always open to meeting new friends - guys or girls. Especially
if they live in the greater Ohio area :-)
In terms of dating, I'd love to find a girl who digs what’s written
above, who has a constant appetite to learn, a fascination with
different languages, an adventurous spirit and finally a huge,
generous heart. Granted, I can't profess to have all (or any) of
the above-mentioned attributes, but I'm trying and would love to
meet a girl who's trying on her end, too. Email me if you connect
with that as well.
