These things can never be catalogued in mere list form, but I'll
attempt, with a caveat--this is only a smattering of my extensive
opinion:
BOOKS: To
the Lighthouse, Mrs. Dalloway, The Sound and the Fury, The BFG,
Midnight's Children, Lolita, short stories by Borges, House of
Leaves, Love in the Time of Cholera, Point of Purchase: How
Shopping Changed American Culture, The Things They Carried,
Angels in
America, The Witches, Long Days Journey's into Night, Their
Eyes Were Watching God, Beloved, Mathilda, Cities in a Global
Economy, LOTR trilogy, The Lonely Londoners, The Remains of the
Day, Black Sexual Politics, The Portrait of the Artist as a Young
Man, Brave New World, The Catcher in The Rye, Gay New York, and The
Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (and Six More).
MOVIES: The
Piano, Happiness, Before Sunset,Moulin Rouge, Annie Hall, Charade, The
Big Lebowski, Man's Favorite Sport, Audition, What's Up, Doc?,
Irreversible, A Fish Called Wanda, Sex and Lucia, When Harry Met
Sally, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, Withnail and I, 9 to
5, City of God, LOTR trilogy, Some Like it Hot, Secretary, La
Haine, To Catch a Thief, Spirited Away, Manhattan, The Piano
Teacher, All About Eve, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Doctor Zhivago,
Mulholland Drive, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Desk Set,
Triplets of Belleville. If you have a secret (or not-so-secret)
obsession with 50's and 60's movies, this bodes well for you!
MUSIC: OK, I'm giving in and listing more specific groups
(groans inwardly): Aimee Mann, Alanis Morissette,
Tori Amos,
Poe, Suzanne Vega, Madonna, Goldfrapp, Jem, Caroline Lavelle,
Rachael Yamagata, Kings of Convenience, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, The
Magnetic Fields, Hooverphonic, Fat Boy Slim, Badly Drawn Boy, Led
Zeppelin, ABBA, Henry Mancini, Annie, Bonobo, Rammstein, Edith
Piaf, Moby, Beck. Generally, rock of all stripes (especially
oldies), jazz standards, musicals, classical (especially Mahler,
Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky), heinous 80's music, techno, europop,
plus I particularly enjoy compilations of foreign
music---lounge-groove Tex-Mex with accordians and an inscrutable
horn section? Yes, please!
FOOD: Sushi
definitely tops the list, with everything else running a close
second: Thai, Ethiopian, Mexican, Burmese, French, Italian, Korean,
Vietnamese, Continental, Indian, Tibetan, Indonesian, soy in myriad
forms...I think Thai renders Chinese utterly obsolete (apologies to
anyone Chinese, but seriously, have you tried Thai?)
