My self-summary
Hey! Are you there, goddess? It's me, Brian. Anyway, I'm 32 and I have a five year-old son, which makes it hard to find compatible people in the circles that I travel (I'm a waiter and bartender and an MBA student). Not to say that I'm looking for something super serious or that I'm a conservative dude; I'm just at a point in my life where a relationship should be predicated on more than consumption of copious amounts of jagermeister and a mutual affinity for the Black Keys (although they do rock).
I'm very active--I exercise just about every day and love being outside--and I'm intellectually curious to a fault, which is a fancy way of saying that I'm a nerd. Not in a lock-myself-in-my-room-and-play-World-of-Warcraft way mind you, but in a general sense. I love reading and I love learning and I try and instill that thirst for knowledge in my son (much to his chagrin. Did I also mention that I'm insufferable?)
I also cook, play shitty guitar, write bad fiction, and pretend to finish the New York Times crossword puzzle (I'd probably be better at any of those if I didn't insist on doing them all at the same time).
So if it's an insufferably pretentious troubadour nerd you're looking for, look no further. We could camp out at the Smithsonian, "Night at the Museum" style, and I could regale you/bore you to tears with tales of Pleistocene-era megafauna while we munch on homemade kale chips and buffalo jerky. Or we could just jam out to the Black Keys. Either way...
What I’m doing with my life
Trying to GET OUT OF THE RESTAURANT BUSINESS for good. I'm an MBA student, which I really enjoy, though I'm still unsure as to which direction I'll head afterwords. My hope is to one day have minions/an empire/Citizen Kane-esque girth. Or all three (But most likely just the last). (seriously, though, I'm interested in non-profit work and global economic development)
I’m really good at
Finding the humor in things, keeping a level head, public speaking (from someone that's interminably shy, that's weird, right?), cooking, finding the ripest cantalope (my kid LOVES cantalope), packing a sleeping bag into a stuff sack, calculating 28.6 percent of a check (that's $7.15 on $25), remembering birthdays without the aid of facebook, knowing when to switch back to a channel after the ads are done, making grocery lists and then forgetting them in the car/not consulting them when I'm actually shopping, and then buying nothing but Goldfish crackers, HT cookies and pasture-raised-hormone-free pork shoulder.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Authors/Books--Bill Bryson, Life of Pi, David Sedaris, Heller, Ed Abbey, E.O. Wilson, Chuck Klosterman, DFW, A River Runs Through It, The Art of Fielding, pretty much anything about historical figures that changes/reinforces your preconceptions about them (or makes you want to have sex with them)
Movies--Dead Man, There Will Be Blood, Kingpin, Traffic, Boogie Nights. PTA, Jarmusch, Scorcese, Sodenberg, the Farrellys, the Coens, and of course the Apetow/McKay empire.
TV Shows--thurs. night lineup on NBC, Family Guy, The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, It's Always Sunny...
Music--Blues, Rock, Reggae, Funk, old-school punk, or any combination thereof. Bad Brains, Gov't Mule, Black Keys, Citizen Cope, The Wood Brothers, Parliament, The Meters, Dead Meadow, to name a few
Food--anything. And I do mean anything. I will eat anything that someone puts in front of me, though I haven't eaten fast food in over two years.
The six things I could never do without
My son's travelling toy bag (comes in real handy anytime we have to wait more than 30 seconds for anything)
My chef's knife
My Guitar(s)
My flip-phone (yep, still a flip phone. Are they retro enough to be cool yet? Probably not)
My bike
My sunny fucking disposition/wrathful fury (can't have one without the other, right?)
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Astrophysics, evolution, pleistocene-era megafauna (giant sloths and saber tooth tigers), social injustice, my chronically flawed golf swing, the future, guitar licks, what in God's name is that person eating and can I try some
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I have a crush on Ryan Gosling. Purely heterosexual, of course.
I’m looking for
  • Girls who like guys
  • Ages 23–37
  • Near me
  • For new friends, activity partners
You should message me if
you want to chat, or hang out, or ridicule my life choices. Or all three.
