My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I think of myself as a pretty nice guy, though I occasionally exhibit a bit of a wisecracking sense of humor that I think I picked up on the East Coast at some point. I like to talk with friends while sitting at bars, restaurants or cafes - and especially enjoy debating politics and other issues. I love to travel, and have explored much of Latin America.

I like to walk and hike, and am currently trying to explore new trails in the East Bay and on the coast. I try to jog a few times a week, and I'm told my love of greek yogurt is abnormal. I like discovering new wineries, though I'm a bit reluctant to embrace the snobbery that comes with wine connoisseurship. Sometimes, especially if it's raining, I like to go to the movies.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Currently, I'm working on completing a PhD, and assistant teaching. Previously, I taught high school Spanish in the rainy Pacific Northwest, basic health in the Peace Corps in Paraguay, and then did Spanish/English medical interpreting in Portland. Upon completing the Ph.D., my goal is to become a college professor.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
... speaking Spanish and Portuguese. Finding the humor in situations. I'm also good at travelling abroad, if it means anything to be "good" at that. In the last few years, I've been to Paraguay, Brazil, and Mexico. I like the spaghetti that I cook, but you'll have to be the judge of how good I am at making it.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Hmm... I should probably ask somebody. My rosy cheeks? Smile? Height? A facial tic I have due to a mild eye injury I suffered half a lifetime ago?
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
Movies: Action and drama, almost anything by Lars von Trier. Sometimes comedy.
Books: A mixture of novels, economics and history - the best books I've read in the last few years have been The Return of a King by William Dalrymple, The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt, Grande Sertão: Veredas and Sagarana by João Guimarães Rosa, 1493 by Charles Mann, and The Tyranny of Experts by William Easterly. I just finished The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling - and yeah, I loved Harry Potter!).
Shows: Breaking Bad, Covert Affairs, Doctor Who, Sherlock, The Walking Dead, Downton Abbey.
Music: Brahms, Mozart, Maria Rita, The Sword, Chico Buarque, Maria Bethânia, High on Fire, Joe Bonamassa, Verdi, Red Fang, Pearl Jam, Stevie Ray Vaughan, etc.
Food: I like almost anything, but especially sushi, pizza, hamburgers, pupusas, and Brazilian steak, and various types of Asian cuisine. I also think quinoa is tasty.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Family and friends, a passport, a laptop, a good book (or two), a hat.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
What to work on next. Where I should travel to next. Whether the best wines are from California, Oregon, or Washington. Go for a run now, later, or tomorrow? Heavy metal or classical?
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
At a bar chatting with a friend, if that's on the table. Otherwise I'm relaxing at home with a book or a movie. Or at the movies. I'm not a hard partier.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
At Thanksgiving, I think cranberry sauce tastes better when it's shaped like a can. I'll open up about more private things in person.
