My self-summary
I think of myself as a pretty nice guy, though I occasionally exhibit a bit of a wisecracking sense of humor that I think I picked up on the East Coast at some point. I like to talk with friends while sitting at bars, restaurants or cafes - and especially enjoy debating politics and other issues. I'm moderately liberal and not religious, but I don't need people I meet to share those characteristics. I love to travel, and have explored much of Latin America. I'm working on a Ph.D. in political science.

I like to walk and hike, and I wish I hiked more often. Last year, I took up jogging, and try to jog a few times a week. Sometimes, especially if it's raining, I like to go to the movies.
What I’m doing with my life
Currently, I'm working on completing a doctorate in political science, and assistant teaching. Previously, I taught high school Spanish in the rainy Pacific Northwest, basic health in the Peace Corps in Paraguay, and then did Spanish/English medical interpreting in Portland. Upon completing the Ph.D., I hope to become a college professor.
I’m really good at
... speaking Spanish and Portuguese. Finding the humor in situations. I'm also good at travelling, if it means anything to be "good" at that. In the last few years, I've been to Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico.
The first things people usually notice about me
Hmm... I should probably ask somebody. My rosy cheeks? Smile? Height?
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Movies: Action and drama, almost anything by Lars von Trier. Sometimes comedy.
Books: A mixture of novels, economics and history - the best books I've read in the last few years have been The Return of a King by William Dalrymple, The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt, Grande Sertão: Veredas and Sagarana by João Guimarães Rosa, 1493 by Charles Mann, The Battle of Bretton Woods by Benn Steil, and The Tyranny of Experts by William Easterly. I just finished Flash Boys by Michael Lewis. And once in a while I like crime novels, especially Jo Nesbo's works. Sometimes I just need a plot that moves.
Shows: Breaking Bad, Doctor Who, Sherlock, The Good Wife, The Walking Dead, Downton Abbey.
Music: Mostly rock, heavy metal, but I also enjoy classical music, bluegrass, Brazilian, and opera. Love Brahms, Mozart, Bach, Motorhead, Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento, High on Fire, Joe Bonamassa, João Bosco, Verdi, Red Fang, Torche, The Sword, Pearl Jam, etc.
Food: I like sushi, pizza, hamburgers, Salvadoran and Brazilian and various types of Asian cuisine. And steak. I make decent spaghetti, and can boil a mean white rice ;)
The six things I could never do without
Family and friends, a passport, a laptop, a good book, a hat.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
What to work on next. Whether to finish the book I'm reading, or move on to a more interesting one. Where I should travel to next. Go for a run now, later, or tomorrow? Heavy metal or classical?
On a typical Friday night I am
At a bar with friends, if that's on the table. Otherwise I'm relaxing at home with a book or a movie.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
At Thanksgiving, I think cranberry sauce tastes better when it's shaped like a can.
