My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I like to hike, read good books, and chat with friends while sitting at bars, restaurants or cafés. I especially enjoy debating politics and other issues, and do sometimes play devil's advocate just to make things interesting. I love to travel - I've explored much of Latin America, and a tiny chunk of other parts of the world.

I've been exploring hiking trails in the East Bay and on the coast over the last year or so. I try to jog a few times a week. I love good whiskey (particularly bourbon), wine, backgammon, opera (listening more than watching, at least for now), beer, hanging out, and teaching. Sometimes, especially if it's raining, I like to go to the movies.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I'm completing a PhD and teaching. Previously, I taught high school Spanish, served in the Peace Corps, and worked as a Spanish interpreter.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Finding the humor in most situations. I like the spaghetti that I cook, but you'll have to be the real judge.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Somebody recently told me I have a baby face. I like to wear full brim hats, so maybe people notice that.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
Movies: Action and drama, mostly. Sometimes comedy, occasionally horror if it's actually good (like 'The Conjuring'). Hunger Games and Harry Potter, of course.
Books: A mix. The best books I've read in the last few years are Grande Sertão: Veredas by João Guimarães Rosa, 1491 and 1493 by Charles Mann, and Moby Dick. I also devoured HP and Hunger Games, and a good dose of Scandinavian crime fiction. Right now I'm reading Mark Twain's autobiography, which is pretty funny and doesn't require me to pay much attention.
Shows: Breaking Bad, Covert Affairs, Doctor Who, Sherlock, The Walking Dead, Downton Abbey, The Mentalist, Major Crimes, the Daily Show.
Music: I like a lot of different styles, including rock, bluegrass, blues, and very occasionally jazz. But my favorites are heavy metal and classical (they have similar degrees of complexity and challenge the ear, I guess). Brahms, Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, Verdi, High on Fire, Machine Head, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Rimsky-Korsakov, Janacek, Prokofiev, etc.
Food: I'll eat almost anything.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Family and friends, a passport, intimacy, a good book (or two), a hat.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Where I should travel to next, and when. Go for a run now, later, or tomorrow? I think about a lot of deep and shallow things.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
At a bar chatting with a friend, if that's on the table. Otherwise I'm relaxing at home with a book or a movie. Or at the movies. I'm not a hard partier.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I'll answer just about any question in person. I don't have a highly developed filter.
