Books: Oh, so many to choose from! Let's see (I'll list authors
rather than books, and order is alphabetic rather than preference):
I've read most books written by Douglas Adams, Margaret Atwood,
Alessandro Baricco, Julian Barnes, J.M. Coetzee, Amitav Ghosh, Dave
Eggers, Jeffrey Eugenides, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, John Irving,
David Mitchell, Amélie Nothomb, Haruki Murakami, Salman Rushdie,
Jonathan Safran Foer, Shaun Tan and they all have written at least
one book (and often more) that I would recommend everyone to read.
I'm forgetting many more, and I limited the list to fiction, but it
gives already an idea. Apart from literary fiction, I also enjoy
thrillers (the best one I read last year was 'Before I go to sleep'
by S.J. Watson), non-fiction (particularly about science and
history) and poetry (in Dutch: Herman de Coninck, Rutger Kopland
and Ted Van Lieshout are amongst my favorites).
Movies: Nowadays, I don't go as often to the cinema as I used to,
but I still enjoy it a lot. Last movie I saw in the cinema was "The
Broken Circle Breakdown" (which I liked a lot), I recently watched
some old classics (Bergman, Fellini) by coincidence rather than on
purpose. If I had to pick a favorite director, I'd go for the Coen
brothers, but there are many more that I like. From what's running
now, I'm actually considering to go to the latest James Bond (which
would be a first). Although I really liked the LOTR, I'm not sure
about the Hobbit; and although I like Ang Lee, I don't know about
Life of Pi either.
TV shows: I liked The Killing quite a lot, Breaking Bad was good,
and most HBO series are also quite nice (I recently saw the first
season of Game of Thrones: very good!). Guilty pleasure: I used to
enjoy Desperate Housewives as well. From Flemish TV, I thought Quiz
me quick was pretty good. As for comedy, I still like the British
series the best: Green Wing, League of Gentlemen, Smack the pony,
and of course classics like Monty Python and Blackadder.
Music: here also, I have an eclectic taste: the more variety the
better. I like contemporary bands (such as Eels, Mumford &
Sons, Elbow, The National, Sigur Ros, Fleet Foxes, alt-J, Muse,
...) as well as more classic rock and singer-songwriters (the
Beatles, the Stones, Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, Bruce Springsteen,
Nick Drake, Daniel Lanois, Dire Straits, Tom McRae), world music,
folk or cross-overs (Manu Chao, Gotan project, Goran Bregovic,
Beirut, Loreena McKennitt, Madre Deus, and many obscure folk bands)
but also enjoy classical and even contemporary classical (Arvo
Part, Ludovico Einaudi, Wim Mertens, Johann Johannson, Nils Frahm)
music, and - to a lesser extent - jazz.
Food: I eat anything, but have a preference for the Asian
(particularly sushi and Thai curries) and Italian cuisine. I really
like spicy food; and if not spicy, I prefer it seasoned otherwise
(coriander, nutmeg, cumin, oregano, ...), life's too short to eat
bland food. Particularly when eating out, I like a glass of good
beer or wine with dinner as well. As for other drinks, I have a
minor coffee addiction.
I'm not a great chef, but I like cooking and experimenting in the
kitchen - and yes, the results are edible :-)
