My self-summary
Love my career as an urban educator, grateful for it. During the winter, my ideal day involves my children playing peacefully while I listen to music, sip some red wine, and warm the house with smells of soups, breads, souffles, etc... Summers are spent at the lake (swimming is a divine experience), hiking Mt. Tom, cooking with local organic fresh foods, picking berries or veggies or flowers or herbs.
What I’m doing with my life
Loving my 6 year old son and my 8 year old daughter; urban education....working everyday to get better at supporting, inspiring, propelling my beloved students; yoga and meditation some days; listening to music and dancing around; reading; cooking new recipes and experimenting with new foods (just shucked my first oysters!). I love to go for a hike with my dog, and to squeeze in a movie whenever I can.
I’m really good at
Teaching. Gratitude. Reflecting. Following a recipe. Walking in heels. Intuiting people and situations. I grew an impressive tomato and parsley garden this past summer. My students tell me they think I am funny. I'm a good listener. I am adept at starting to learn a new skill like knitting or quilting or guitar or sourdough bread baking or beekeeping and then abandoning it. I write fairly well. I've had pretty good luck at the casino now and then.
The first things people usually notice about me
I guess you know the answer to this better than I.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Some of my favorite books: Ahab's Wife, Sula, The Grapes of Wrath, To Kill a Mockingbird, Wild, Just Kids, A New Earth, The Omnivore's Dilemma. I'm a bit impatient with fiction these days. I like reading books about the Supreme Court justices--The Brethren, The Nine and, now, I'm making my way through The Oath. I subscribe to The New Yorker and will miss weeks of issues but, when I do finally settle into one, I'm always enriched and pleased.
Some of my favorite movies: Harold and Maude, It's a Wonderful Life, The Insider, Gone With the Wind, Raising Arizona, Fargo, Sense and Sensibility, Rushmore, The Departed, Lost in Translation, Almost Famous, Blue, Wonder Boys, Big Night, Goodfellas.
I watched and loved The Wire and Breaking Bad on Netflix; I got sucked into Homeland, Downton Abbey and Madmen on dvd too. I just finished a House of Cards binge. The only television show I watch is Survivor. I absolutely love it.
Some of my favorite music: Sigur Ros, The Pixies, Jeff Buckley, Califone, M. Ward, Arcade Fire, Sonic Youth, Tom Waits, OutKast, The Beatles, M83, CAN, Joni Mitchell, PJ Harvey.
Favorite food: I was vegan for years and vegetarian for decades but I have a tenuous relationship with vegetables. Broccoli, cauliflower and I don't even speak. Now anything goes (except dead baby animals) as long as I know something about the related environmental practices and where the adult dead animals came from and how they were treated (and now I'm thinking of that ordering chicken scene in Portlandia).
The six things I could never do without
my daughter
my son
beyond that I'm very fond of:
the everpresent but fluctuating pile of books,
music
diet coke on tap
although I didn't own a car until I was 31 (lived in Boston until then and relied upon the T and my bicycle), my car is pretty necessary to me now. And I'm ok with that. But I miss the urban biker lifestyle, too.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The people I love; music I am listening to and books I am reading; my work; how to live a life of integrity, generosity, love, joy, spirituality. I've been dreaming about the scent of lilacs. I'm thinking about the upcoming summer, and how I want sailing and kayaking to be involved. And glazed vanilla cream filled Donut Dip donuts.
On a typical Friday night I am
laying low at home with my kids and, after they sleep, watching a movie or reading.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Everything I've said thus far.
