My self-summary
Well, I've been described as goofy yet in an endearing way. I've got quacking like a duck down to a science. I'm tall and yet I can't sit at a desk with a computer (in private) unless I curl up into a ball or contort myself into some position that most people would think is uncomfortable. I sometimes stumble over words when I'm really nervous. I am a mature and understanding person at times when such a demeanor is appropriate though.

I loathe constant negativity although I am by no means without my down days. I have this hanging at my work desk ( ) Bonus points if you know what it is from. Anyway, my philosophy on life kind of boils down to a strange mix of that and the quote "The Dude abides". Again, bonus points if you get it.

I'm technically minded and pragmatic. I used to build Legos a lot when I was little and I built an awesome beach chair and lamp in a shop class in eighth grade. I'm actually looking into where I can take woodworking classes. Give me something from Ikea and I will build it for you with pleasure. I like to learn how things work, which has led me to be handy with computers as well as most electronics. I'm my family's tech support/handy man. This has extended to them getting me to fix their friend's stuff, whether it be a laptop or cable TV setup.

I like geeky things, so I guess that makes me a geek? I don't know, I've never been good with labels. I dig webcomics. I watch a lot of cartoons and Comedy Central with a dash of trashy reality TV. The whole computers thing falls under this as well. I used to play video games a lot but these days I rarely top an hour or two a week. I have a bit of a passion for bowling even though I rarely get the chance to go anymore.

I don't believe in guilty pleasures. As long as you've got well rounded tastes and enjoy "good" things with the bad, you shouldn't feel bad for enjoying something others might not. I can get as much fun out of watching something dumb like Surf Nazis Must Die as I would from The Grand Budapest Hotel, albeit for different reasons. Like what you like, you know?

I'm just a kind, genuine person. Please don't confuse that with being a "nice guy". I don't wear a fedora, I don't think women only date assholes and I'm certainly not an MRA. I'm simply considerate of others because I believe that's the best way to try to make the world a better place. I hold doors for people behind me and always say thank you. I've gotten a newspaper for an older gentleman on the street that I didn't even know just because he asked me. I try to help whenever I can and I try not to make a fuss. Life has enough drama as is without people making even more over nothing. I'm just an honest and straightforward person and I'm looking for someone similar. I think the Dalai Lama was on to something when he said "My religion is kindness".

btw, I'm just now getting with the times and have an instagram account at Look at the dumb pictures I take! I also have a twitter account @becktionary. I make no promises about it being interesting though.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm currently working full time as a software engineer and it's pretty great. The work is more often than not interesting and the people I work with are amazing. Plus we have a wall of cereal and a popcorn machine. It doesn't get much better than that.

I'm looking to be a bit less of a homebody and get into some more outdoor activities like kayaking, hiking, etc. I also hit the gym three times a week so while I may not be quite as chiseled as Ryan Reynolds, I'm working on it.

Just recently decided to learn how to play guitar. I have no aspirations to doe anything serious with it but it's fun to noodle around and learn songs I really like.

I've also recently started studying Zen Buddhism as a means by which to lead a better life with less stress and anxiety. I don't necessarily consider myself a Buddhist but it's surprising just how many of the beliefs align with the outlook I've had on life for a while.

Basically I'm just trying to better myself every day and trying to make the most of what's in front of me.
I’m really good at
I'm really good at actually listening when people talk as opposed to waiting to speak. I've also been told I'm pretty patient, understanding, considerate and good at being comforting.

As I mentioned in my about me section, I like building stuff and I'd say I'm pretty good at it.

Remembering useless pop culture trivia. Pitt Quiz Bowl represent.

I've also been told numerous times that I'm a good kisser :)
The first things people usually notice about me
I'm pretty tall.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Gonna go with Rob Gordon-esque top five lists, otherwise this will get out of hand quickly as I'm fairly passionate about the media I enjoy. My friend Maureen likes to say I'm "pop-cultured", which is a phrase I'm quite fond of.

The six things I could never do without
If it really came down to it I could do without a lot, so my list is pretty short:

The ability to put things in perspective
A sense of self awareness
Buttered toast
I spend a lot of time thinking about
What other people are thinking about.

Teddy Roosevelt.

What's the deal with the Kindle version of some books costing more than the paperback on Amazon? I mean, come on.

How much better the dating process would be if more people followed the tips in this article ( ). Despite being aimed at "the feminist male", a lot of it is applicable to dating in general regardless of gender.

How can I better channel my inner Dale Cooper.
On a typical Friday night I am
Submitting things for the approval of the Midnight Society.

Getting reprimanded by bowling alley staff for booing a friend.

Being cajoled into some kind of crazy eating challenge at a bar while a friend bullies the jukebox with chapters 1-5 of R Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet".

Seeing a movie at Row House Cinema (hopefully a RiffTrax'd one) or hanging out at Kickback Pinball Cafe.

Trying to make something delicious, sometimes with success.

Practicing guitar or marathoning something on Netflix.

Depends I guess.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I once thought I had mono for an entire year. It turned out I was just really bored.

But seriously...

I think cuddling is pretty awesome.

I may or may not be addicted to popcorn and Dr. Pepper.

I unironically enjoy Batman (1989) and Batman Forever and I will not apologize for this fact.

I could not care less about the Steelers. I don't mind if you do, but Pens 4 lyfe.

I don't get the appeal of Doctor Who. At. All. On that subject, I cringe every time I see someone who lists the Big Bang Theory as a favorite show.

Also I'm kind of picky when it comes to women. I'm not unrealistic but I don't believe in settling when it comes to dating.
You should message me if
You think this comic is hilarious: (I fully intend to smear pie on my face this day)

You remember and miss Homestar Runner.

You like amusement parks.

You're a genuine and honest person capable of communicating what you want and how you feel in healthy ways. I give my trust out pretty freely but I don't have time nor the patience for games and bullshit.

You're not full of yourself. Confidence is sexy, arrogance is not.

You know what you want and what you're looking for in terms of dating. You're looking for something with long-term potential. I'm not looking to rush anything but I want something with substance.
