Before I start listing my favorite books, I want to make one thing
clear: literature is a very serious passion for me. I am pursuing a
career in writing with greater frequency as the years go on, and I
use a quote by John Waters as a basis of life: "We need to make
books cool again. If you go home with someone and they don't own
any books, don't fuck them". I broke that rule once. The
relationship was entirely one sided. It is one of two mistakes I do
not intend on repeating.
That being said, here are a few of my favorites:
Most Chuck Palahniuk (especially 'Survivor'), 'Hater' by David
Moody, 'The Mist' by Stephen King, some Irvine Welsh (my favorite
by him is 'Glue'), 'American Gods' by Neil Gaiman, 'Heart Shaped
Box' by Joe Hill. I enjoyed the two books I've read by Chad Kultgen
(The Average American Male/Marriage) with an extreme tongue in
cheek.
I also read comics quite regularly. Marvel is killing it right now!
I also read/have read most titles by Matt Fraction, Scott Pilgrim
series, Sin City, Locke and Key, anything illustrated by Ben
Templesmith, 'I Kill Giants', 'The Walking Dead', 'Y: The Last
Man', most Jonathan Hickman books... (yeah, I'm a bit of a
nerd.)
Movies: mostly horror or independent. I'm a fan of Stanley Kubrick,
Akira Kurosawa, Guillermo del Toro, Christopher Nolan, Wes
Anderson, Sam Raimi... as you probably noticed, I see movies based
on who directs them. But I will go see any movie with Gary Oldman
or Bruce Campbell in it.
It's not really a requirement that you watch foreign films, but if
you do, there is a requirement that you watch them in the original
language with the subtitles on.
As far as television: Californication, Weeds, Dexter, The Venture
Bros. MST3K, Breaking Bad, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Doctor
Who...
