I am a smartie, a hottie, and a sweetie.

My Self-Summary

I am smart, sarcastic, and irreverent; kind-but-tough, good-but-bad, fun-but-serious, shy-but-bold. I am a little quiet so it takes getting to know me, but I think I'm pretty good company, a great listener, loving, easy to be with, curious, and cheerful most of the time. I tend to listen more than I talk but I can also be very direct when necessary.

I’m a devoted single, working mother of a toddler, so my time is very precious. I try to fill it only with activities and people I love. For the most part, I succeed.

I'm kind of geeky, kind of dorky, kind of jocky. I've been known to write a line or two of elegant code, and I have a special place in my heart for emacs. I make my living working on big websites, which is a tad geeky, but it's really more of a job than a passion. I'm not into MMORGs and I don't run Linux. But if you do: great. I tend to hang out with people who are way more geeky than myself, and I’m just fine with that.

And then there's the dorky side. I have an old person's taste in music. I love to garden. I spend way too much time looking at the Breck's catalog (if you know what that is you should message me right now because we might be soul mates; either that or we can swap bulbs). I'm hopelessly behind on pop culture, I don't watch television, and I somehow managed to grow up in the 80s without having watched any MTV. I do, however, love public radio... Car Talk, This American Life, even Prairie Home Companion. Let’s face it, I’m un-hip.

And a bit of a jock. I'm pretty fit and I do as much exercise as my schedule permits. My favorite short workout is 100 burpees in my kitchen. I like to call it the busy Mom’s workout. I recently discovered Crossfit, I enjoy semi-regular relaxing, zoned-out runs, and I dabble in rock climbing. In my past lives I’ve been a gymnast, a dancer, a runner, and a rower.

I'm looking for companions and companionship, lovers and friends. I'm not looking for a boyfriend or a girlfriend, or a husband or a wife… at least not in the traditional sense. I am honest, loving, and I don’t do much drama. I don’t always know exactly what I want, but I’m out there looking for it anyway. I make it a point to learn stuff from the people in my life, so if you can teach me something new, fantastic.

What I’m doing with my life

Working full time, mothering a toddler, fixing up my fixer upper, taking care of myself as much as possible which includes working out, gardening, occasionally resting, reading a book now and then, and enjoying the company of wonderful people.

I’m really good at

I don't know that I'm *really* good at anything, but I'm pretty good at:

Cooking healthy food
Tending my garden
Parenting my daughter
Interface layer web technologies
Listening and being a good friend
Making people feel happy
Parallel parking
Pushups
Handstands
Interior design on a budget
Speaking Spanish

The first things people usually notice about me

I don't know... if we meet, maybe you can tell me!

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: I am not terribly well read. Partly because my parochial school education frowned on literature, and partly because I'm a slacker. But, I have managed to crack open a book or two.

Siddhartha is my all-time favorite. I re-read it from time to time. Since I discovered Kindle on the iphone, I'm enjoying a bit of a personal reading renaissance. I always enjoy science fiction, especially classics like Neal Stephenson and William Gibson. I just finished Birthday of the World (had not previously read Le Guin). Love Isak Dinesen and Murakami. I'll always be fond of Hunter Thompson. For some reason, I also really love The Sun Also Rises, though I don't pretend to understand Hemingway.

Movies: Love movies of all kinds. Some of my favorites include Dersu Usala (don't worry, no one's ever heard of it) and Babette's Feast. I also love a good Kung Fu (love Jackie Chan and Chow Yun Fat) or action-adventure movie. And, I'll admit it... I've seen Terminator 2, like, a hundred times. What can I say? I love Linda Hamilton.

Music: All time favorites are Leonard Cohen and Nina Simone. My tastes in music run to the sort of old and fuddy-duddy. Love big band and swing and old time folk. I have been known to rock out on occasion but I don't seem to enjoy rock and roll as much as my peers. That said, sometimes after a few Shiners and a few great songs, a rock and roll show seems like just about the funnest thing on Earth.

TV: don't have one and don't really watch it. However, I'm a huge BSG fan. I haven't finished the series yet so no spoilers!

The six things I could never do without

My daughter, sunshine, physical activity of some kind, a place to call my own, music, my computer, and coffee.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

How to get everything done; how to fit work, recreation, and enough love into my life; my next home-improvement or landscaping project.

On a typical Friday night I am

Chasing my toddler around, bonding with friends, or both.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I've done a lot of wacky stuff in my life, and yet people still assume that I'm "good". I guess I'm good-but-bad, which is the way I like it.

I cry at sad books and movies, and sad stories.

I can't spell worth a damn.
