It's nice to be nice or is it?

Looking through people's posts everyone is looking for a 'nice' guy or 'nice' girl.  There are various posts from guys saying that nice guys finish last and no-one wants a nice guy.  Well what about the nice ladies - where do they finish?

Is it just a lack of imagination when describing what we are looking for, or a misconception of what nice actually is, and is anyone actually looking for nice?

An image of ohnowutwillitsay I think saying "nice" is too vague. I don't say I want a "nice" guys, because #1 What person would ever say 'I'm not nice'... I think everyone's definition is different. Some of the nicest guys just aren't boyfriend material for other reasons... Nice guys finish last because, in my experience, nice guys tend to be clingy and dare I say "too nice" (whatever that means, right.)... girls don't want a guy they can run over... but at the same time they don't want a guy who completely disregards their wants and needs. I think "nice girls" have a better chance of not finishing lasts, because a guy would LOVE a "go with the flow" "everything is peachy", type of girl. However, nice, in my experience, fails when u don't have sex on the 1st, 2nd, or OMG, 3rd date... then ur "too nice", and not exactly what a guy wants to deal with. I think saying nice is the easy way out, and people tend to not look deeper at things that are so common, to see exactly what that person means... and because u have done that, I do applaud u. (now hopefully I didn't put that in my profile lol)

An image of angellogic This is a more involved question than you might have imagined when you asked it; "nice" is one of the most complicated words in the English language. It used to mean foolish and senseless, and it also meant wanton and lascivious, but even as early as Caxton it also meant elegant and smart ("full of proper and nyce"). The OED says "The precise development of the very divergent senses which [sic] this word has acquired in English is not altogether clear."
