My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Nobody ever feels comfortable filling these things out, and always feels all the worse afterward. But anyway... things I like, which are also liked by 98% of people on okc, are traveling, exercising, hiking/outdoors, and reading. I also like cycling, volunteering, museums, and walking in parks and around the city. I have a black belt in Shotokan and have practiced Aikido. I'm generally an optimist and I think humor is important. My humor tends to be somewhat on the darker side.

I've traveled extensively, and have been to all 50 U.S. states, nearly 100 countries, and all seven continents. I really like road trips and national parks. I find hiking in the Hudson Highlands to be one of my favorite local things to do and I hike a few times a month. I'm really good at traveling on the cheap, and I give presentations to students at my university to show them how to travel on a shoestring budget.

I'm an atheist (of an axiomatic ontological variety), politically/socially to the left, and vegan. Yeah yeah, I know, makes me sound like some sort of pinko commie. If you would like to know some of my philosophical leanings, I have an inclination toward metaphysical naturalism, causal determinism, moral subjectivism/emotivism, minimalism, and existential nihilism (however, I am very optimistic and find this philosophy oddly comforting). Egad! Perhaps that's too much information for a dating profile, wouldn't you say? Did I really just use "egad" in a dating profile? Yikes!

Okay, so summarizing my life in three brief paragraphs with the main purpose of making me seem mildly attractive to certain types of people made me feel just a little bit sad.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I'm a professor at a university in New York, and my doctorate is in mathematics education. I mostly prepare teachers to teach mathematics, and I memorized pi to over 200 decimal places just to entertain my students. Writing this makes me realize that I guess I'm sort of a nerd. By "guess" I mean "know," and by "sort of" I mean "definitely." But I can knock out 1000 one-arm pushups in under 30 minutes. Not kidding, took years to build up to this and recently I learned I'm not terribly far away from several world records... go figure. Not many nerds can do that.

I was greatly tempted to cut and paste the standard requisite phrases such as "I work hard and I play hard," "I'm keeping it real," and "I push it to the extreme." However, I made a difficult decision not to contribute to the collective male douchebaggery making its way through this website. Sorry if that's disappointing for you.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
being confident about the things I do. Renowned psychologist Albert Bandura emphasized the critical role of self-efficacy, and I tend to believe he was correct. Anyway, is this confidence/Bandura crap working on you yet? If so, we can go on a date or "have a hang" as the young people call it today.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
are my awkward body and painful ugliness. Really now, what sort of question is this? I guess I can be a little eccentric/nonconventional, but then again, the only normal people you know are people you don't know very well. With that said, if you're looking for a regular "normal" guy to hang out with, there's a non-zero probability you've found yourself on the wrong page. Bah, normal = boring.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
Books: I almost exclusively read books with pictures of cats who find themselves in precarious situations in which humor will inevitably ensue. Otherwise, mostly non-fiction books about history, psychology, nutrition, philosophy/religion, economics, and politics. If I read fiction, it's primarily the books most people dreaded on their high school summer reading lists. "There's more to life than books, you know. But not much more, not much more."

Movies: Anything with a wise-cracking back-talking dog. It's movie-going at its finest. I'm fairly flexible and like documentaries, indie, and Hollywood flicks.

Music: I grew up mostly on the hardcore, punk, alternative, and indie variety, especially from the 1980s/1990s. I played guitar in a couple bands when I was younger with unlistenable music that most sensible people would categorize as unsustainable "obnoxious noise."

Food: I'm vegan but easy going toward others about it. I mostly eat healthy and unrefined food. I enjoy cooking at home, but when I go out my favorite restaurants are Indian, Ethiopian, and healthy vegetarian/vegan.
Accurate vegan joke:
Q: "How do you know if someone is vegan?"
A: "Don't worry, they'll tell you."
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
1. computer/files
2. traveling the world/outdoor activities
3. exercise
4. healthy food
5. I'm running out of things here.... I don't know... I guess poetry or art or something... whatever.
6. you.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
the reasons people do the things that they do, particularly from an evolutionary psychological perspective. I often think about life and the passage of time. While I'm very motivated and a high achiever, one of my favorite quotes is, "The inexorable passage of time makes every project we undertake ultimately futile."

Also thinking of what I can say to make you laugh. I like to be entertaining when possible.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
probably at home nerding it up, or out on the town nerding it up.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
is that nobody cares about my private things because everyone is more concerned about their own. Also, I like to have fun and I enjoy laughing.

you are smart, friendly, and interesting (real-life interesting, not only okc-interesting).

Being a little quirky/weird never hurt anybody either.
