I am funny, courteous, and caring.
My Self-Summary
I do "computer stuff" for a living and recently realized that I
spent too much time working and not enough time making local
friends after moving here from Austin almost five years ago.
I'm looking for folks who aren't afraid to crack a joke; people who
are bizarre, strange, funny, geeky, dorky, or just "different".
Friends who would rather heckle movies at home or play Rock Band
than go to a club.
I try to be a great friend and shoulder to lean on; there's nothing
wrong with being known as a "really nice guy".

What I’m doing with my life
I'm making new friends and rebuilding relationships with old
ones.
My wife of eleven years passed away unexpectedly in June of 2009. I
miss her but am grateful for and have plenty of good memories of
the time we had together.
It's time for me to get out of this empty house and start being
social - you can only play games on the Internet so long before you
start going nuts.
I'm a systems administrator for a large energy services firm, and
have been at my current employer for almost seven years, and have
done this type of work since 1995.
My hobbies include reading, watching TV and movies, electronics,
home automation, restoration of old computer systems, playing
guitar, and occasionally making chainmail jewelry.
I joined the Freemasons in October of 2008, and attend functions at
Gray Lodge #329 one night a week. I finally became a Master Mason
on 11/5/09, my birthday. The following evening, I got my first
tattoo - the Masonic Square and Compasses - on my upper right arm.
I’m really good at
Being an honest, dependable, reliable, and trustworthy friend,
despite having a fault of being too generous to others (sometimes
to my own detriment).
I host all of my own servers and web sites (doing all of the
sysadmin work, design, and maintenance) and have run a number of
community sites and mailing lists for almost fifteen years.
I've been on the
Internet since 1993, have worked for
numerous Internet providers, and have done everything from
front-line tech support to installing backbone connectivity for
large companies.
The first things people usually notice about me
I'm a nice, polite guy. I believe in saying "sir" and "ma'am",
"please" and "thank you", "excuse me", and holding the door open
for people. Chivalry should never have died out.
I've been told I have nice eyes and don't understand the
fascination some women have had with my hair or eyelashes.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
I read a lot of
science fiction,
fantasy, and military
adventure. Everything from Robert Heinlein to David Drake to trashy
Mack Bolan books. I've been known to get nose-deep in 1950s Bell
System phone company documentation when bored. Right now i'm making
my way through "Infinite Jest" by David Foster Wallace.
I listen to a little bit of everything when it comes to
music - just depends on my
mood at the time. I was a country radio DJ for four years in high
school, but my favorite concert was finally being able to see The
Sisters of Mercy in Austin in 2006.
I like smart, intelligent
movies that make you leave the theater
thinking about what you just saw. I can't stand movies that are
stupid just to be stupid. "Dumb and Dumber" was the only movie I
ever walked out of.
As for food, I'm a big guy. I'll try anything once. I like to eat
Korean and mediterranean food when I can, but am just as happy with
instant mac and cheese or Hamburger Helper.
The six things I could never do without
Friends, family, good books, a job, and Internet access. When I
watch TV I like shows such as Modern Marvels, How It's Made, and
things on the Discovery or History Channels.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Making new friends and learning how to be myself rather than the
person someone else wants me to be.
On a typical Friday night I am
Talking with friends online, helping friends with their computers,
going out for dinner, or reading a book while sitting at home in
front of the TV.
I'm not a bar hopper and I don't drink often, but I don't mind
other people drinking around me as long as they do it responsibly.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
I'm not afraid to cry or show emotion. I've done a lot of that
since June, but it's time to remember the good times I had with my
wife and honor her memory while getting on with my life at the same
time.
You should message me if
Want to make a new friend? Want to chat online, offline, come over
to play video games (Rock Band or Guitar Hero)?
Due to some unfortunate prior encounters here, I have to make this
clear - I'm ONLY looking to make friends.
Extra points if (like me) you're not skinny/have curves/are
famine-resistant/aren't afraid of a double cheeseburger and like to
occasionally spontaneously go out for conversation and a milk shake
or ice cream. It's personality that matters, not physique.
