My daughter created this profile and username for me. Unfortunately I can't alter it without ponying up a fee. Apparently many people are pinging me with curiosity about my username. A simple Google search should clarify; but please don't take it too seriously.

I have played around on the survey questions primarily to humor a friend and must say, as a social scientist, I find most of them entirely laughable, but hey, laughing is fun. Now am filling out essays to kill time while watching Star Wars marathon with son in Machete Viewing Order. Apologies if I accidentally refer to you as a scruffy-looking nerf-herder.

Judging by replies so far there also appears to be some confusion about my status. Am "currently in a committed relationship with fun and freedom" BUT this emphatically does NOT mean what a number of you seem to think it means.

To the rest of you: I may be willing to correspond when time permits and/or if you have something interesting to say. Would welcome activity partners for fun around the valley.

Parenting. Writing books about human rights and armed conflict. Blogging and working less frenetically than I used to. Rock-climbing. Snowboarding. Connecting w/ my far-flung tribe of friends / family. Teaching future policymakers why bad things happen and how to prevent them. Taking stock of life and its changing currents, resting for a spell while figuring out my next maneuver (which will likely have something to do with a new book project and transcontinental travel). Putting the tao into practice.

Over-analyzing science fiction movies or pretty much anything. Speaking truth to power, not always effectively though! Baking extremely creative birthday cakes (toast-making skills not so brilliant...) Cranking out books and articles and inspirational videos about human security. Being outside my comfort zone. Making lemonade.

I try not to speak for other people, unless they are vulnerable and unable to speak for themselves (or I'm leading a game of "Wolf!"...) Anyway, it would depend on which people. My students tell me I'm fun and stylish "for a prof" but really tough. From others, I get comments on my eyes and my wit. It depends on if they meet me in person or on the internet, and which of my many selves I'm wearing that day...

well, well, well another trite and ridiculously phrased question. people can do without most things besides water, food and sleep. even those, for awhile: just ask any prisoner of conscience.

anyway aren't we our best selves when we are learning what we can live without?

what do i not WANT to go without? the internet. meaningful time with my children and siblings. great food, travel to far-off countries beyond the sea, good books, time in the mountains and on beaches and in caves, new experiences of most sorts.

what the universe is trying to teach me
how to meet my children's needs and find time for my own
how to better protect civilians in armed conflicts
killer robots: on balance, good or bad??
game of thrones: who will be alive at the end?

finishing up a writing day while kids are elsewhere, having drinks or dinner with a friend, hitting the climbing gym, heading home for a bubble bath, some yoga and an episode of Homeland.
