music: sassy guitar bands, Americana (folk/jazz?) 1920-1960, Hot 97 1997-2007, something loosely organized under NYC art punk?
books: science fiction, history books, historical novels, novels that were written long enough ago that they're kind of like histories, biographies, satire, "the great american novel" category.
TV: science fiction, those deeply character-driven hour-long dramas about LIFE in AMERICA, goofy smart stuff. Don't really have guilty pleasures when it comes to TV - either I think it's good and I like it, or I think it's bad and I don't like it.
Lately obsessed with podcasts, and starving for people to talk about them with. There are so many amazing ones and I've barely scratched the surface, but among my so-far favorites are BackStory, Girl on Guy, the Bowery Boys, In Our Time with Melvyn Bragg, the Duncan Trussell Family Hour, the Mental Illness Happy Hour, Harmontown, SuperEgo, Judge John Hodgman, Welcome to Nightvale, The Moth, Professor Blastoff. And of course the NPR trifecta: This American Life, RadioLab and Planet Money.
