I am forward, backward, and upside down.

My Self-Summary

My philosophy in life these days is that one day I'd like to be on my death bed and be able to tell people great stories about my life. So my New Year's resolution was to get out of my comfort zone at least once everyday and try something new. Sometimes these turn out to be really awful experiences, but when you approach it with a good sense of humor, those sometimes make the best stories.

I tend to obsess over things that interest me and I try to learn as much as I can about them. Anything from prepared piano music to synethesia to the Spanish revolution, anything that fascinates me. I can be serious when I need to, not all the time. I'm not capable of it. I never saw the point in being too serious about life if you can't also enjoy it sometimes.

What I’m doing with my life

I work for a company that makes television documentaries. We've done a couple of feature films too. In my spare time, I explore the city, I listen to music, and I read.

Once a year, I try to travel somewhere I've never been before. I haven't made it to the southern hemisphere yet, but I'm, working on it. Someone once told me that she thought it was depressing that there was too much of the world to ever be able to see it all. I disagree completely, that's what I love about it.

I’m really good at

I like to write and do some occasional artwork. I don't like to evaluate my own work, that's for someone else to do. I just write because I like to.

The first things people usually notice about me

Probably my facial hair. Since I grew it out, people have asked me why and I always find it interesting to hear their theories. People have asked me if it was for religious reasons, if I'm a Marxist or if I was trying to look like Freud. People seem to think what they want to think about it, which has actually come in handy a few times. Honestly though, I just liked the way it looks.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: 1984, Slaughterhouse Five, The Trial, Brave New World, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, The Death of Ivan Ilych, The Dead Em Cee Scrolls, The Stranger, Persepolis, Siddhartha, Catcher in the Rye, anything by Noam Chomsky or Naomi Klein.

Movies: The Science of Sleep, Brazil, Amelie, Goodbye Lenin, Control, 2001: A Space Odyssey, City of God, Motorcycle Diaries, The Five Obstructions, Superbad, The Pianist, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Withnail & I, Man With The Movie Camera, Slam, Rushmore

Music (just a handful): Bjork, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Aphex Twin, Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Saul Williams, Squarepusher, Lou Reed, Brian Eno, NEU!, Leonard Cohen, Air, Sigur Rós, Aesop Rock, Four Tet, Prefuse 73, The Beatles, Kronos Quartet, LCD Soundsystem, M.I.A., Boards of Canada, Oval, Stereolab, The Zombies, Joy Division, New Order, PJ Harvey, The Clash, Stevie Wonder, Cinematic Orchestra, Massive Attack, Einstürzende Neubauten, Rage Against the Machine, Daft Punk, Depeche Mode, Lee Hazlewood, Orbital, Santogold, Sun Ra, DJ Shadow, Hauschka, Steve Reich, Portishead, The Sonics, Nina Simone, John Coltrane, My Bloody Valentine, Amon Tobin, Tortoise, The Horrors, etc, etc...

Food: I'm not a vegetarian, but my favorite restaurant in the world was a vegetarian place in New Jersey when I used to live there. If you know of a place that has vegetarian food as good as that, I will be in your debt. I do know a good kebab place around the corner though.

The six things I could never do without

My passport, some places to explore, art, music, friends and family, not necessarily in that order.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

The world around me. I like learning about new philosophies and politics that challenge my own worldview because I don't believe it should be all black and white.

On a typical Friday night I am

I don't like the idea of a typical Friday night. I think if I were able to come up with a single answer, I'd have to start looking for something else to do immediately. It might be a show, a museum, drinks with friends, or exploring parts of the city. Or it could just be staying at home to write or watch a movie. Depends on the week. The same goes for any other day.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I have considered making a Wikipedia page for myself. But I'm sure I'm not the only one who has.

You should message me if

If you're in the New York area and want to talk.

I sometimes find that after reading these profiles, there's nothing in particular that seems like a good conversation starter. So here's my plan. Ask me anything of these things and I'll try to answer honestly, no matter how odd or embarrassing it is:

-What are the first five songs that comes up when you put your ipod on shuffle?
-What was the last youtube video you watched?
-What random fact did you learn on wikipedia today while you should have been doing something more productive?
-What are your feelings on [news story of your choice]?

And please share your own answers too, if you'd like.
