I am diverse, spry, and ostentatious.

My Self-Summary

Raised in the city of Milwaukee, I've been in Madison for quite a bit now and I consider myself somewhat settled, at least for awhile. I'm happy to have finally achieved a great work/life balance, and I'm getting to do a lot of the things that were only thoughts and ideas a few years ago. I'm hoping to fit more traveling in 2010, so if you've got suggestions, I'd enjoy hearing them!

When I'm not on the clock, I love just about anything that gets your body moving. I ride my bike a lot (my car doesn't get driven very much), but I also enjoy things like climbing, hiking, and snowshoeing. You'll also see me at art gallery showings, cinematheque, and the film festival and book festival. I know I can't go to everything going on around the city, but I plan on going down trying!

What I’m doing with my life

I'm a hazardous materials specialist for the UW. Totally awesome. It's funny where a chem degree will take you.

I train new lab employees, do regulatory compliance, hazmat emergency response with the fire dept, and hazardous waste logistics. If you're a UW grad student in the sciences, you'll probably deal with me or my counterparts in some work context at some point in your stay. Hopefully, for the both of us, it won't be when I'm putting out the fire on your shirt.

An odd perk of the job is that I get to force people to watch training videos like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9xEmzFAgCo

I’m really good at

Taking things apart and putting them back together, dancing lindy hop, salsa, and tango, cooking without a recipe, and getting virtually any idea across through stick figure drawings. I also have a funny eye for odd details.

In my spare time I race bicycles, but when I'm not racing I ride around town as slow as humanly possible. Slower than you, in fact.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: As a kid, The Call of the Wild, Dune, Starship Troopers. As a somewhat adult, The Big Sleep, Blood Meridian, Invisible Man, The One Straw Revolution.

Movies: Cool Hand Luke, Ghost in the Shell, The Yakuza Papers, North by Northwest, Rififi, Tron, The Thin Man, Ran, Glengarry Glen Ross, Hero, A Fistful of Dollars. (Style over substance, right?)

Music: Coltrane, Maxwell, Bjork, David Bowie, Turbonegro, Seu Jorge, Goldfrapp, Tom Waits, Fela Kuti, Mastodon, Sparklehorse, The Clash, Burial, Townes Van Zandt, PJ Harvey, and many other things on my massive hard drive.

Food: I love anything with spinach, sushi, cooking soul food, eating various fried things that are bad for me, and bourbon on the rocks, which is always good for you.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Career stuff, sustainability, environmental science, the way things work (I'm a nerd), whether or not to buy a house, fitting more volunteering into my schedule, how to get ridiculously jacked.

I'm just kidding about the jacked part.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

It's hard to find pictures of myself to post up here, because most of the time I'm either photo bombing or mugging for the camera.

You should message me if

-You think we have something in common.

-You've been really wanting to go check out that band/event/flaming drink/movie/gallery/box of mystery that everyone's been talking about. Yeah, I heard about that too.

-You also enjoy riding bicycles very slowly.

-You need something fixed (or broken, which is almost the same thing in the long term, right?) immediately.
