I am irreverent, writerly, and glowing.

My Self-Summary

Life is good. My friends seem determined to find me a man, and it seems like I'd better do a little work on my own to avoid talk of someone's cousin's roommate's sister's dog groomer who also likes to read and drink coffee and can also punctuate correctly, which everyone knows I do like (you can't beat a well-placed apostrophe or em-dash, you know). So here I am, glorious in my ability to write sentences long and short, and also able to amuse myself and others, run with scissors, cook vegetarian food creatively and well, and other important and useful things.

What I’m doing with my life

I work in higher education, spending a good deal of time wrangling policy, regulation, funding, and forms, and also writing things down.

I’m really good at

Cooking. Writing (poetically and bureaucratically). Reading. Thinking. Watching Netflix. Playing with small children. Being kind to animals. Picking colors that look good together. Reading aloud in weird voices. Coloring outside the lines. Mangling the punchlines in jokes. Looking words up in the dictionary. Making spreadsheets.

The first things people usually notice about me

Apparently I have twinkling blue eyes.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I just finished watching "Jekyll," the BBC version with James Nesbitt and Gina Bellman. It's brilliant just before bed. I also like other good British TV, including Doctor Who (from the time I was 12 and Tom Baker had that long scarf) and Eddie Izzard, and also Monty Python, yes, of course.

I like classic movies. This means James Stewart running around being earnest and wonderful, or Bogart being reluctantly brave, or Katherine Hepburn being saucy and smart. I'll even take a few modern gems.

I read lots of fiction and poetry, from Agatha Christie and Raymond Chandler to Salman Rushdie, Neil Gaiman, Amy Tan, Pablo Neruda, and Calvin & Hobbes.

I'll eat anything that didn't have a mother or a face--that is, I'm an adventurous vegetarian. I love all sorts of ethnic food (Thai, Mexican, Ethiopian, Indian, Chinese, Italian if they can please not drown it in that nasty cream sauce -- I don't like nasty cream sauce).

The six things I could never do without

Isn't it amazing that 80% of people answer this with "well, air, obviously, and food, and my harley," or something and waste their six things? Geez.

I'm fond of words (all of them).
And also music (John Coltrane is playing at the moment).
And cookbooks,
kitties,
caffeine,
and my hammock.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Creating a spreadsheet to rank my six favorite things.

On a typical Friday night I am

Laughing, talking, eating, slouching in jammies, playing cards, watching movies . . . depends.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

Cardamom is really good in coffee.

You should message me if

You know what cardamom is. Also message me if you're smart, witty, interested in the world, kind, creative, and would take spiders outside rather than smush them.
