My self-summary
I'm Patrick. Call me Pat.

I'm an engineer who was just recently awarded his Ph.D from the University of Florida, in Gainesville and, thus, a die-hard gator. I love to learn new things and to sample new experiences. In fact, I get bored if I'm not doing at least one of those two things on a regular basis! I have a passion for data.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm an Engineer specializing in electronic materials. I've built everything from microscopic gears and lenses, to LCDs, to microchips. I used to work with transistors which go into space satellites. My graduate work focused on learning what makes them blow up when you use them the wrong way. It was a fun project and it payed the bills, so I had no objections. Now I've moved to Portland to begin a career working for a certain well-known microprocessor company which wants me to build transistors instead of breaking them. I'm hoping that it'll be an interesting change of pace.

In my spare time, I love to read and to write (especially science fiction... shocking, I know). I'm actually in the process of finishing up the first draft of a novel for publication. I really like to play the guitar, though I generally stick to the blues and classic rock and roll. I've also recently taken up Kendo (Japanese fencing), which is something I've wanted to do since I was a teenager. I used to be on one of Gainesville's most successful and famed trivia teams (successful because of our placement in championships and famed because of our drunken tomfoolery and highly offensive team name). While no one will ever replace my trivia buddies, I would like to find another team to play on. I also cook when the urge hits me. My signature dish is Chicken Katsu usually followed by a scratch-made pie, but I probably shouldn't have given away the surprise. Oh well.

I've been enjoying Portland quite a lot. It's a big city compared to other places I've lived in the past and I'm enjoying the process of exploring. So far, I've bar hopped (a lot), gone to a Blazer's game, gone to a few breweries and the random strip club or two, watched a buddy nearly kill himself kite surfing on the Hood River, learned how to drive stick (albiet badly), and even gotten a white-knuckle-inducing lesson in how to fly an airplane. We live in a fun city!
I’m really good at
being a huge geek.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I used to be kinda terse in this section, but I decided that I'd fill it out in more detail since everyone else seems to be doing it. I'm such a lemming.

I spend a lot of time thinking about
the Universe. It's big, so it takes a lot of time to think about it.
On a typical Friday night I am
trying to convince myself to go out and do something.
My success is highly dependent on who's hanging out with me.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
is that I'm very afraid of heights. They're my one semi-irrational fear.
I'm generally foolhardy enough to manage despite it, though.
