I am enquiring, intrigued, and mimsy.

My Self-Summary

I'm curious and want to learn more about everything. I'm a thinker who likes getting his hands dirty. I'm very logical but at the same time deeply emotional. I'm a scientist interested in cultures and arts. I'm liberal and intellectual. I can seem reserved until I get to know someone but I'm fun with my friends. I'm well travelled and educated. I take life seriously but I enjoy laughing at the absurdities of the world. I speak a couple of languages - English and Spanish - and get by in some others (I'd like to speak better Italian, and not just a mangled mishmash with Spanish as I do at the moment - are there any Italian speakers around?). I'm a gentleman who believes in the equality of woman.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm an Englishman who's been living and working in Spain for fifteen years now. For the past eight of those years I've been here in Granada. I'm very lucky to be one of those people who manage to get paid for following their vocation: I'm an academic research scientist. I'm a physicist, but my research is interdisciplinary; much of it is looking at the physics of biological systems. I'm based in Granada, but I spend a fair amount of time working with colleagues around the world. I really enjoy travelling to work with a colleague, usually a friend, in this way - it's so much more fun than being a tourist. I get to see places from the point of view of the inhabitants, I get shown the sights by a local, and at the same time get to see what it's like to live there.

I’m really good at

Well, I'm good at my work, because as I said, it's not a job, but a vocation. My friends tell me I'm good at being a friend. I'm also good at getting my hands dirty: things like building and fixing stuff, gardening, car mechanics (I've got several old cars that I never get enough time to work on). I'm getting pretty good at photography.

The first things people usually notice about me

My phenotype? Most people comment on me being tall and slim. Although I enjoy walking and cycling, my build is just down to my genes.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I'm not really one for making lists of favourites, so I'd rather describe my tastes:

First books. I don't get to indulge much in browsing bookshops here in Granada, unfortunately, as it's something I can spend hours doing. Spanish bookshops are fine for books in Spanish, but not for books I want to read in their original English, and although Amazon is marvellous for buying books, it can't replace browsing in a good bookshop. I supposed this question is interested in my taste in fiction books, which ranges from Austen to Murakami, but I also read a lot of nonfiction, both related to my scientific interests, and also to enthusiasms of mine like past civilizations (the Romans in particular, but recently I got fascinated by the Minoans).

Movies. I like to see films in their original languages, which is not so easy at the cinema in Granada for non-Spanish movies. I love Laurel and Hardy, and I hate horror movies.

Music. I have catholic tastes. The four CDs on top of my stereo right now are of Mozart, Pink Floyd, Flamenco guitar music, and Seu Jorge.

As for food, I'm lucky to be able to eat Mediterranean cuisine every day.
I enjoy trying new foods, and will eat and enjoy almost anything that's placed in front of me. I do draw the line at insects, however nutritious they're supposed to be, and brains; no prions for me, thank you very much... I must admit that as I've grown older I've found I cook less and less for myself. I used to enjoy doing this at university, but nowadays I prefer to eat out.

The six things I could never do without

Apart from the vital, I'd prefer not to live without a bed to sleep in and a hot shower in the morning (I come up with a lot of ideas in the shower). That plus a pen and paper to write ideas down. But there are many things I'd hate to be deprived of: human company, my family, my friends, ...

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Mostly about how the universe works. Sometimes about why the world doesn't work. Often on the very great pleasure which a pair of fine eyes in the face of a pretty woman can bestow (to say nothing of a pair of beautiful legs, or ...).

On a typical Friday night I am

I don't think that there is a typical one. If I'm not travelling I may go for a drink with friends in the evening, I might be eating out, or watching a film, or I may be inspired with an idea and be working on that.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

Censored: you'll have to ask me...
