My career involves Internet technology. I teach, write, and organize communities and conferences. I'm a small business owner.
In school I studied Urban, Economic and Transportation Geography; Business; and Operations Research. I completed a B.S., an MBA, and over a year of post-graduate study.
My hobbies include travel, movies, linguistics, economics, board games, good governance and good conversation. I have proven weaknesses for French food, French movies and Swiss watches.
I have interests in geography, cartography, typography, law, politics, journalism and history. I don't follow sports.
I try to use the subjunctive case just to keep in practice. I prefer older forms of irregular English verbs because I don't want to see them go away. It's "pled", not "pleaded". My favorite Scrabble word is faqir because I clean up on points and the inevitable failed challenge.
I live South of Market in San Francisco, don't own a car or TV, and don't drink coffee. I'm highly skilled with Uber, public transit, and the occasional rental car. I'm perfectly willing to be unconventional. I generally steer away from the pervasive American consumer culture. I'm an independent thinker. Some people want a big house; I want a big life.
I grew up on the East Coast and still have a bit of that personality. I grew up Presbyterian/Methodist, but now that I understand science, I'm non-religious. I'm an Eagle Scout and a bit of an adventurer.
I'm trying to live an examined life. I reserve the right to get smarter. I generally like to wade into things with the attitude of, "If I'm not careful, I might learn something".
I like to travel. I've been to 37 countries. I really like Paris, Tokyo, Bangkok, and Central and Northern Europe. I like foreign films and foreign cuisines. I host a technology conference every fall in Europe.
Politically, I tend to be fiscally conservative and socially liberal. I'd like to grow my business and create jobs, so I'd prefer balanced budgets and a stable currency, but it's OK with me if someone wants to gay marry their stem cell-created illegal immigrant sweetheart.
Dogs, cats, and children usually like me, a lot. I like them right back.
My heroes include Teddy Roosevelt, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, Ernest Shackleton, Penn Jillette, Larry Walters, Norman Borlaug and Carl Sagan.
