I am nerdy, curious, and levelheaded.

My Self-Summary

I'm a perpetual student, raised by a family of perpetual students. I'm probably happiest when I'm teaching myself something, as long as you include listening to music as a learning experience. I'm a vegetarian, but I'm only mildly smug about it. For about six years of my life, I was a pedestrian, and though I now own a car and have stopped bumming rides from friends, I still love walking to wherever I can, even in ugly industrial areas. I've been known to give hour-long explanations of my tattoos, occasionally with diagrams, but they're mostly just there because I think they look cool.

What I’m doing with my life

Let me just get this out of the way: I'm a grad student, so I ask myself "what am I doing with my life" a lot already. Right now, I'm using grad school as an excuse to get paid to study whatever I want - from the physics of cells to the math of poker to circus performance (don't tell my advisor).

I’m really good at

I've had my nose stuck in one book or another for as long as I can remember, and have usually written something to go along with it. Math is my second language, German my third (and by far the weakest). Performing in front of people is also natural - I'm a lot more comfortable on stage than in small groups.

Then there's the hobbies where I don't have any real talent, but I love, and practice enough to fake - playing guitar, and contact juggling (an old video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8spbqwYs21Y) come to mind.

The first things people usually notice about me

"Why do you have a crystal ball in your hand?"

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

BOOKS / For legibility, I'm only going to list a few - I also need to reinforce my bookshelves.
Ficciones - if I ever learn Spanish, it will be to read this, and Marquez in the original. I still love Speaker for the Dead even though Orson Scott Card is a raging asshole. The Crying of Lot 49, if you like paranoia, The Eyre Affair is the best book about books, and Spin is science fiction at its best. I also grew up on Heinlein.

MUSIC /
If you make me list top whatevers, it'll probably feature:
Sleater-Kinney, Deerhoof (the best band all my friends hate), Gogol Bordello (the best live band I've ever seen), Spoon, The Arcade Fire, Blackalicious, Hot Tuna, John Fahey. I've also developed an obsession with MF DOOM.

Food: Indian, especially lime pickle, but anything spicy and vegetarian is excellent.

The six things I could never do without

Glasses (after 18 years with them, it's psychological), pen and paper (I think better with a pen in hand), computers, real books (even though I have a kindle, too).

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Patterns, mixing and unmixing, new senses.

On a typical Friday night I am

Reading, working, or out with friends.

You should message me if

I like to talk with most people, though it should probably go on the list of "things I'm not actually good at," so with that proviso, message away.
