On Sending Mail Into the Void

May 8, 2007

I'm not sure if there's some glaring error in my profile or if I'm sending some subconscious signals in my messages, but really, the rate of return on messages sent out into the okcupid void is starting to feel even lower than craigslist. Out of some 50 messages sent out in the past month or so, 1 or 2 replies is pretty slim pickings. I must say, it's a bit dissapointing putting work into looking up interesting people, often with high match percentages, carefully reading their profiles and constructing a well thought out message saying hello. Maybe okcupid is like craigslist, flooded with guys. My female friends who have accounts here seem to suffer from an endless deluge, often unable to keep their mailboxes from filling up. I mean, hell, I had better luck with myspace back in the old days of pre-corporate myspace (though nowadays, I avoid that place). Really, I might as well give up, as I'm obviously not up to snuff for the people of okcupid.

An image of Jayalin This blog just randomly came up, and I'd thought I'd say I share your experience. Been here for almost... two years? In that time, I've managed to find one person I regularly hang out with, and one or two more I speak with intermittently. Given the number of people I've found on here who seemed potenially interesting and I've made efforts to contact, it really is pretty depressing. :) So far as I can tell, the male-female ratio seems close enough to even that that can't be the explanation. I've had so many interesting mail conversations suddenly cease that I almost want to swear that they don't get through sometimes.

Well, I'm a girl and I haven't had many return messages lately. So I'm wondering if that whole statement I added about how I am not really into casual sex has alienated me from all the guys on here or something =P But, it is not only you guys that suffer from people not returning messages!

An image of okkervilla PS -- are the three d's in Buddist on your profile intentional? I know that's awfully nitpicky, but you've linked the word as an interest, so if you want to show up in regular searches for the term, it's not just a matter of spelling snobbery!

okkervilla commented on May 8, 2007

An image of brookswift well, some messages are short, some are longer and more detailed. I've tried quite a bit of variety in messages. the three d's in Buddist are intentional. that first paragraph is the sample profile they give you while editing your profile. The admins were wiley and wrote a script preventing you from using that paragraph in your profile, so I hacked around it by doing the triple d Buddhist.

This is the third "maybe I should just give up" journal post I've seen in the past week.

An image of MeherBaba you is too much better for us! you should give up and go to myspace, maybe? Seriously, this is not the kind of post that will bring the hungry oversexed female masses running.

Maybe you just need to work on targetting the kind of person that would want to talk to you, with a message that you'd want your kind of person to appreciate.

Post a message for critique purpouses.

Go for it Richard, I think the OP isn't going to accept our help. But be warned he may plagiarize yours.

An image of brookswift plaigarize no, be inspired by, maybe. well, i deleted most of my failed messages already because my sent items box was full, but here's one that I've found from a while ago. looks like her profile has gone inactive: you're another gal addicted to ac transit, eh? i'm assuming you go to berkeley. what are we going to do when our class pass goes away? anyhow, just saying hi, as another bus addict (how ELSE do i get to class in a reasonable fashion?), i thought i'd give someone with so much awesomeness a nice little message. i love the hair ;)
