My Self-Summary
I moved here, with my lab (job not dog), from Houston a little over
two and a half years ago. I love it in San Diego.
I'm working on my PhD in cellular and molecular biology. I love
graduate school. I work too much for too little pay, but when I
graduate, it will mean I discovered something no one else knows.
How cool is that?
I generally spend 60+ hours a week in the lab. This has made it
difficult to expand my social circle very far from work. While I
spend a lot of time in the lab, I'm largely on my own schedule, so
I can still manage to get away when I need.
What I’m doing with my life
Working and learning.
On my off time I'm getting more active. Golf, mountain biking,
surfing, and snowboarding. To be more accurate I guess it would be
having fun while driving a golf cart in circles looking for my
ball, trying to catch my breath on the seat of a bike, falling off
a surfboard and rolling down a mountain like a giant snowball.
I’m really good at
Fixing stuff.
The first things people usually notice about me
I have no idea.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
a) Unfortunately, I haven't read for pleasure in quite a long time.
When I'm not working or reading papers for work, I prefer the mind
numbing influence of TV to help me unwind. I'm want to get back to
reading, so if you know of any great short story collection let me
know. Preferably something twisted and funny.
b) Almost anything by the Coen Brothers, Charlie Kaufman and Terry
Gilliam. I generally prefer a smart screenplay to special effects,
but can still appreciate mindless violence and absurd
comedies.
c) I like at least some of almost every kind of music. Generally I
listen to 94.9 or 91.X. I have recently started taking advantage of
the live music scene.
d) Chicken Bryan Texas from Carrabba's. Grilled chicken breast
topped with goat cheese, sundried tomatoes and a basil lemon butter
sauce. Since I can only get that back home in Houston, I try and
eat sushi or grill steaks at home as often as possible.
The six things I could never do without
science, diet coke, beer, meat, friends/family, laptop
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The impact of chromosome end protection on cancer, aging and
evolution.
On a typical Friday night I am
Having drinks with friends from work. Generally at a wine bar, a
dive bar or a friends house. Occasionally, going to all three
followed by deeply philisophical science discussions at 5am. Either
that or watching a movie at home.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
I think I'm turning into my father.
