A few years ago I was living in Vancouver (while attending film school) and had a sketchy little apartment near the downtown Eastside. The pink neon light from the Biltmore Hotel's crummy sign use to spill into my room at night. Combined with the misty moist air and eerie amber of the sodium vapor street lights, it often resembled a poor mans Blade Runner set.
About one trillion excellent shenanigans happened during my time there, but three incidents I hold to heart:
i) While taking the late night #8 Bus (I lovingly named the Crazy 8) a Buddhist monk traveled up and down the bus with a stick, banging a red fire alarm tied to string . Shaved head, orange robes and all. I found the loud ding and long reverberation to be tres awesome. This was much better than the same old same old bus ride. He then came over to me, having not spoken to anyone else, smiled and said "You are a million rays of light." Awesome. He continued his gonging and I left the bus happily confused.
ii) Same bus a few months later. A tiny old lady comes on to the bus and sits across from me. I think she was waiting at the stop a few centuries because her clothing was that of a Halloween Gypsy costume, but all authentic-like. If you hit her with your car or foreclosed on her house, she would certainly curse you something terrible. Just before my stop she leans across the aisle and says to me with a smile "Everything will turn out alright for you, you'll see." I said a genuine thank-you and then it was my stop.
iii) Some time later, after just getting off the aforementioned bus I notice a rather animated fellow handing out pamphlets with a very emphatic "Jesus loves you!". Person after person is greeted and gifted with "Jesus loves you" and a pamphlet. I get my "Jesus loves you" but then the man turns around, his face twisted and says to me "But I hate you."
So the Buddhist monk thinks I'm a million rays of light, a gypsy foresees everything will be alright for me, Jesus loves me...but some dude with pamphlets hates me.
I'm in a most excellent open relationship with tell_me_a_fable and I or we enjoy the company of relaxed, creative and aware ladies or couples or see folks on our own. Emotional and sexually maturity mixed with the good kinds of immaturity are all aces here.
