All the books strewn around the house seem to be nonfiction. Right
now, there're "Culture and Imperialism", "The Pagan Christ", "The
Black Jacobins", and an old British book on palmistry on my bed.
Also: Eric Hoffer, Jacqueline Suzann, L.M. Montgomery, J.K.
Rowling, J.R.R. Tolkien,
M.F.K. Fisher, Helen Fielding, Sue
Townsend... my cousins gave me "The Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael
Pollan, and there are many cookbooks downstairs.
The
Afterlife of George Cartwright and "Smile When You're Lying"
have joined the Amazon-engendered collection in the past
week.
Movies:
Guy Maddin's "My
Winnipeg" was wonderfully funny! He too understands the great
responsibility of living in and loving the centre of the universe.
I have a crush on
Groucho Marx, so there are about 10
Marx Bros. movies in my DVD collection...Comedy figures large:
The Lost Skeleton of
Cadavra,
Beyond the Valley
of the Dolls, Zoolander, Bridget Jones... I don't have TV, just
a monitor & DVD player, so the addictions are getting ever
stronger, plus the Youtube thing:
Little Britain,
Flight of the
Conchords,
Salad Fingers, you know. I just
saw the latest Batman, and kept hearing the dialogue before it came
out of the actors' mouths--so predictable. Though, like everyone
else, I thought Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart were
wonderful.
Music: as a drummer and singer, I tend to go for rhythmic, tuneful
music, such as the following:
Balkan Beat Box,
The Acorn, Stolen Babies,
Poncho
Sanchez, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Richard Wagner,
Nine Inch Nails,
Grieg, Ella Fitzgerald, Korn,
Amon Duul II, Holger Czukay, Jim
Hiscott, Alvo Part, Hank Williams Sr., Bob Wills,
BTO, Giovanni Hidalgo, Nathan,
Vav Jungle, Nat
King Cole, Kraftwerk, Stompin' Tom, Amy Winehouse,
Final Fantasy, Foo
Fighters,
Jully
Black,
the
Weakerthans. The new Beck is wonderful. I find myself becoming
seduced by Middle Eastern rhythms, very much influenced by my
Syrian students.
Food:
Canadian
Fusion, Korean, French, Chilean, Ukrainian, but I'll try
anything once.
