Intellectual, Creative, and Quirky
My self-summary Propose an edit
My greatest passion is English and language. I've been reading and writing for as long as I
can remember—poetry, short stories, newspaper articles, even
English essays, I just love putting words on paper. I'm definitely
an English/grammar nerd. I'd like to go into journalism as a career one day. I
also love music.
I'm slightly (okay, maybe more than slightly) into gymnastics. I used to be a
recreational gymnast (I never competed), and I follow the sport as
enthusiastically as any baseball or football fan.
I'm really into politics and I'm very liberal. I volunteered at New
Jersey Peace Action—a nonprofit antiwar organization—for three
years in high school and worked on several initiatives against
military recruitment in schools. I'm a member of the College
Democrats group at my school, and recently went to Virginia over
Election Day weekend to campaign for Obama—and we won!
I love animals,
and I've been a vegetarian since I was seven. If you
eat meat, no worries, I won't judge you, but vegetarianism
definitely gives you major bonus points!
I love to sleep but I'm completely nocturnal—if I had my way I'd stay up
till 3 or 4 every morning and not get up until 1 or 2 in the
afternoon. Actually, I do stay up till 3 or 4 every morning, but
sadly I can't stay in bed until 1 or 2.
I don't know what I would do without my friends. Human company and
meaningful relationships are SO important to me.
Overall, I'm a really friendly, down-to-earth person. I'm also very
opinionated, and I love good conversation, whether intellectual,
philosophical, or completely trivial!
What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit
I'm a full-time student, but I always try to make time
to just relax and have fun with friends. I write for the Columbia
Spectator (my college newspaper), and I'd like to go into journalism or another
writing-related
field someday.
I'm really good at Propose an edit
Writing, good conversation, and making people laugh.
The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit
I giggle. A lot. I have an odd but apparently endearing tendency to
start laughing uncontrollably at the smallest things.
After that, people probably notice that I'm extremely opinionated
-- I have strong opinions on pretty much everything from politics
to food to books, and I don't hesitate to express them. But you'll
also find that I'm very open to other views. I never judge someone
just because they disagree with me, and I'm always interested to
hear the logic behind others' beliefs.
I also consider myself very intellectual and thoughtful. I don't
shy away from terms like "geek" or "nerd" -- I'm not ashamed of my
passion for learning, and I'm attracted to others who love to learn
as well!
My favorite books, movies, music, and food Propose an edit
I read so much that it's difficult to pick just a few favorites,
but here goes: The Poisonwood Bible, Prodigal Summer, and anything
else by Barbara Kingsolver. The Lovely Bones, Lucky (Alice Sebold),
Brave New World (Aldous Huxley), 1984, Animal Farm (George Orwell),
Harry Potter (JK Rowling), Jane Eyre (Charlotte Bronte), The Bell
Jar (Sylvia Plath), Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse (Virginia
Woolf), The Bluest Eye, Beloved (Toni Morrison), Sophie's Choice
(William Styron), Dreams From My Father (Barack Obama), The Glass
Castle (Jeannette Walls), All the President's Men (Bob Woodward,
Carl Bernstein), Secrets (Daniel Ellsberg).
Some of my favorite movies are The Hours, Sliding Doors, Sophie's
Choice, The Wizard of Oz, Dead Poets Society, Breakfast at
Tiffany's, Mississippi Burning, Frida, Juno, Breakfast Club,
Sweeney Todd, Groundhog Day, Back to the Future, Crash, Monster's
Ball, Romance and Cigarettes, City of Angels, The Guardian, Dr.
Strangelove, The Gray Zone, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. I
love Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep, Robert Sean Leonard, and Cillian
Murphy, among many other actors/actresses.
My favorite bands/musicians are U2, The Beatles, Alanis Morissette,
Billy Joel, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Dusty Springfield, The
Clash, Sheryl Crow, Jess Klein, Evanescence, Melissa Etheridge,
Natalie Merchant, Queen, Sarah McLachlan, and Stevie Wonder. My
music tastes are really versatile, and I'll listen to almost
anything except heavy metal and crude rap.
The six things I could never do without Propose an edit
1. Friends/family 2. Books 3. Writing 4. Cats 5. Sleep 6. Diet Coke
I spend a lot of time thinking about Propose an edit
Politics, good books, deeper meanings
On a typical Friday night I am Propose an edit
Usually hanging out with friends. Some of my best Fridays this past
year were spent lying around in the dorm lounge watching movies,
talking, laughing, and pretending to work. If I'm tired or just
want some alone time, you can find me curled up in bed with a good
book.
Of course, as a student, I do study a lot, but I always make time
for fun as well.
The most private thing I'm willing to admit here Propose an edit
I know all the lyrics to We Didn't Start the Fire.
