I am unflappable, incisive, and alkaline.
My Self-Summary
I live with a small green
parrot, who is snoozing under my right
ear as I type this. I also ride and maintain an aged
motorcycle and make
stained
glass things from time to time.
I'm the eldest of five siblings, all of whom live out of state.
They have collectively produced twelve nephews and nieces (so far),
so I feel no need to add my own. We were raised as fundamentalists,
and I'm the only one of us who no longer is.
I spent far too long in college, but did finish, and paid for it
all myself (but with some Regents' Scholarship towards the tail
end.)
I kept taking classes for a while after getting the diploma:
Japanese is
challenging, but not as impossible as one might think. To
non-natives, English spelling is worse than kanji.
Fall 2008, I went to Christchurch,
New Zealand, rented a BMW f650gs for
a week, and rode it down to Stewart Island to see the
Kakapo. I'd do it again in a
second, but maybe start from Auckland next time.
What I’m doing with my life
Until a year ago, I was the technology manager at a small local
game publishing company. Since getting laid off, I've been feeding
myself doing freelace contract programming, which is going
surprisingly well. Since August I've been working full-time on my
very own iphone game, which should hit the app store within the
month if all goes well.
Away from work, I read, work on my house,
make things, and volunteer at a local
parrot rescue. I
have a soft spot for old-school
SNES RPGs and some
webcomics.
I’m really good at
I have a passable handiness with these newfangled "computer"
gadgets the kids are so crazy about.
I can also work wood, glass, masonry, and certain metals; operate a
motorcycle reasonably safely; and create typefaces that don't suck.
I know that possessive "its" has no apostrophe. I can reach a
mutually respectful understanding with many otherwise-cranky
parrots; large cockatoos in particular get along with me well.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
At the moment, I don't own a copy of
Carl Sagan's
The Demon-Haunted
World, because I keep buying it and giving it to people. I will
also readily purchase yet-unread stuff by (e.g.)
Iain Banks,
Terry Pratchett, or certain
niche-market comic books.
Pixar can do no wrong, as long as The Mouse keeps its cottonpicken
hands off.
I'm fond of
Real
Genius, maybe because Jordan is a dreamgirl to my
demographic.
I never seem to get tired of
Spirited Away no matter how many
people I introduce it to.
Some of the highest-rated stuff in my iTunes library is from the
soundtrack to
Haibane Renmei, which is the best
tv-anime ever. Pandora plays lots of Kate Rusby, Vienna Teng,
Suzanne Vega, Indigo Girls, Loreena McKennitt, etc. to me and
probably thinks I'm a lesbian.
I will eat most anything except for onions or walnuts.
The six things I could never do without
Fluffy little Midori-bird.
Certain close friends.
Most else is negotiable.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Typefaces. Existentialism. Polymorphism. Concurrency. Reference
counting. How to keep myself fed if my enterprise flops.
On a typical Friday night I am
When you're self-employed, every night is Friday night.
(conversely, Friday night is just another night.)
Usually, improving my home, or working, or reading. Playing games
with friends features from time to time.
If I'm not soloing, The Heights is a great place to see movies. For
shows, restaurants and plays I prefer to have company too.
Bars and nightclubs are depressing.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
I flunked out of college my freshman year. (It got better.)
You should message me if
You didn't consider putting lip gloss, lipstick, eyeshadow, or
perfume in your top six list. You want to go for a motorcycle ride
(I have an extra helmet). You have an affinity for reasonably
well-scrubbed nerd boys.
