Q: Why do you walk
different?
A: Because i have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. I was born
with it, but we didn't know about it till I was eight.
It is making my back curve, it also makes my stomach stick
out ,so that is why I walk so different.
It is one of the worst forms of Muscular
Dystrophy.
Its is mostly found in boys, I am one of the very few girls
that have this disease.
Most of the boys are permanently in wheelchairs by the age of
13, and most don't live past 25 because their lung and heart
muscles get too weak to function.
But since i am a girl, it is affecting me different because i
am still walking and my muscles are still pretty strong, the
doctor's don't really know how it is going to affect
me.
Q: Will it get worse?
A: My disease is progressive, meaning it is getting worse and
will continue to as I get older.
Q: Why do you use a wheelchair sometimes but not all
the time?
A: To be honest I don't like to use my wheelchair, who
would?
But when it comes to reality sometimes I HAVE to use it.
Mostly for long distances like parks, hospitals and sometimes the
mall.
And sometimes I just get tired and I want to use it so I
don't fall, because when I fall, I can't get up off the ground,
someone has to pick me up.
Q: Why does someone have to help you get out of
chairs?
A: Because my legs are not strong enough for me to get up on
my own, I mostly need help getting off of couches, movie theater
seats and cars that are low.
Q: Why can't the doctors fix you?
A: Because right now there is nothing they can do, there is
no magic shot or pill i can get that will fix this. They are doing
research for a cure and hopefully in my lifetime they will find
one.
Q: Does it affect your brain?
A: No it does not affect me mentally at all, just because you
see someone in a wheelchair does not mean that they are mentally
handicapped.
I wrote this blog because I want people to know more
about my disease, so they wont look at me so differently, because
really I am just like you just weaker. I really just need friends
more than anything right now and I'm tired of boys looking at me
like I'm an alien, just because I'm not like all the other girls,
doesn't mean I don't want a boyfriend. I just want more people to
understand what life is like for me. If you have ANY questions
don't hesitate to ask me I would love to answer them. I try not to
let this disease get me down sometimes it's really hard but I have
learned to live with it and try my best, because i don't give up, I
could just sit in the wheelchair and let everyone do everything for
me, but I am a fighter and I will do whatever I can to stay walking
and for the most part independent
